German guitar makers, Canna Guitars are making instruments from hemp. We are living in a time where there are some very cool instruments being made from alternative/composite materials! Just thought I'd share and give AC another maker to add to the list if not on there already

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. With guitars it doesn't matter because you can put enough shellac on anything to keep it together to get music out of it.
On the other hand, I would be fine with a maryjane guitar but not so much a maryjane helicopter or puddle jumper. I have flown composite aircraft and would do so again.

Steel;
Thank you for this. I love the headstock and the various styles are interesting. It appears that the Cannas are all steel strings, though the maker invites people to design their own instruments. No indication of cost. |

I'll add it to the Carbon Fiber List because it is an interesting composite idea that does much of what people who want composites are looking for. But frankly, it's still mainly a wood guitar, so sort of on the line.
Hemp body, wood double top, all the rest wood. They sound great for sure. |

Enjoyed listening to the demo on a couple of them, and they sure look cool.
C'mon, someone, pop for one of these and then tell us about it!

A lot of wood, perhaps, but I actually came around to carbon fiber by way of learning about the Blackbird Savoy, which is Ekoa (resin-impregnated linen) and not CF. I think there's room for some of the "cousins" on this subforum. Maybe someday it will just be the "non-wood" forum.

I wonder though. How humidity and temperature resistant is this material? The website is not clear about it, which is usually not a good sign.

Canna only has the body as an actual composite. Wood is less durable, far more prone to affects of heat and moisture, or lack thereof. Generally, the top is most susceptible to damage or expansion, but the neck, to some extent, is also. In both of these portions, Canna uses wood. If Canna's top was not a laminated "double-top", providing some additional strength and hopefully resistance to heat/moisture changes, I wouldn't have added it to the list at all. It is an interesting guitar and design for sure and I loved the sound clips. But for me, for the features I look for in a composite, it's not on my shopping list. |
