I think it comes from other stringed instruments, because I certainly hear fiddle players using the term. Without frets it makes no sense to refer to fretting a note, but I can see how pressing the string against the fingerboard could be thought of as "stopping" the string, because it sets the point beyond which it will not vibrate.

That is correct. On a fretless string instrument (violin, viola, cello, double-bass), one “stops” the string with one’s finger. The technique of playing two notes simultaneously on adjacent strings, typically while fingering the notes, is referred to as a “double stop.”

I was following a continuing Craig's List ad that used almost all the adjectives used here along with, "big bad mama jamma" and ended with, "Price is firm because I know what I've got.". I know what I've got. It was a jumbo Guild for $2500.

This one has a close relative: “if you’re looking at this, you know what it is”

OMG this one causes me atrial fib. The reason I often view an ad is precisely because I do not know what it is but wish to learn about it.

Right? A guitarist just enjoying looking and learning about guitars…who would’ve thought?

I come from the electric world were the word “Mojo” is the most overused, non specific term you regularly hear. After 45 years of playing electrics, I still don’t know how you could spec out a guitar with Mojo? How would you go about ordering a guitar with Mojo? Is there an up charge? How much would “mojo” be worth if Gibson offered it as an option? Would mojo only be available on a Murphy or Custom Shop, but not on a regular production line model? If 50’s Bursts have Mojo, how did they get it when other guitars from the same factory don’t have it?

Lots of questions…..

Guitars don’t give you mojo. You give the guitar Mojo.

Does a brand new guitar that's been "relic'd" (scuffed and thrashed with a bicycle chain to look like it survived decades of sweaty gigs in a questionable joint at the crossroads) have some of this mojo thing?

Go watch vintage electric guitar vids and see how many times you hear them claim that this or that vintage guitar just has the mojo.

According to the Les Paul Forum anything painted by Tom Murphy automatically has mojo. Any LP, 335, or SG from 57-64 has it too. Also the pre CBS Fenders have mojo, but the ones that Jimi Hendrix played do not. Go figure. Mojo is not definable as a guitar attribute. You just have to believe it when “the experts” tell you its so.

Oh yeah - Now that Norlin era guitars are 50 years old, some of the 70s guitars that were previously thought of as junk, now suddenly have acquired mojo too - even if they have pancake bodies and weigh 12 lbs. Its all very confusing…..

I have not looked at every single post, but so far none of those guitar abbreviations, slang bother me.

On occasion I will not know what the given guitar slang stands for. No problem, I just search the net for the meaning.
