Default Xmas album collab

Anybody know of guitarforums.com?

Before I became an active member on AGF, I was active there (because it was the first guitar forum I found). Every year, they'd put together a Christmas album of member songs. Here's the last one before forum shutdown.

Being that AGF has many more members than guitarForums.com (which had like 15 active members), I'd imagine there might be 2 albums: Pro and Amateur albums. Or maybe even 4 albums: Pro cover, Pro original, Amateur cover, Amateur originals. We can decide later.

All submissions of all skill levels will be included in the album of your choice (unless offensive in nature, of course).

I'm wondering if anybody here would be interested in contributing to an AGF Xmas album?

Just a little bit of background on myself.

I've always wanted to contribute a song to GuitarFourms.com's album, but I just wasn't ready. Finally, now, after almost 3 years learning the guitar, I think I can finally put in a very modest song. Unfortunately, I'm here on AGF and not on GuitarForums.com (RIP).

The thing is, the desire to contribute a song was a major impetus for me to improve my guitar skills. It gave me a destination/target to aim for, a payoff for all those practice hours. So, in some ways, I benefitted from the album more than just being entertained by its wonderful songs.

Putting together an album involves some time. I've got no experience in video editing except trimming; so one of the big reasons why I'm asking your about Xmas albums in September is to also give myself some time to learn all this video stuff if there's enough interest. (I'm assuming that I'll be putting together the album; but if there are more experienced folks who are generous with their time, I'll gladly hand over the kingship and assist in other ways.)

I think that is a great idea.

You might be interested to know that the predecessor of the Acoustic Guitar Forum, the Taylor Guitar Forum, compiled a Christmas album as well, way back in 2002. It was quite nice. I just ran upstairs to my guitar room and found my copy. It was one of at least three CDs compiled by the TGF before we became the AGF. These CDs were limited runs that were constrained by copyright agreements that limited them to an agreed-upon run length so you won't hear much about them.

They are always a lot more work than anyone anticipates. There are copyright matters to settle and rights to pay for, collecting and reviewing the submissions and obtaining the individual performer's clearance forms, mastering, art work, liner notes and credits, fabrication, and order fulfillment. These days some of that could be alleviated by delivery via download. I was involved with the mastering of at least one of the TGF CDs.

Also, if it was to fly under the AGF aegis, AGF owner, J.R. Rogers, would have to approve.

Bob

I think, for this, Youtube takes care of it, but I don't know a whole lot here. Thanks for the info!

If you intend to make a video of it, you'd need to get a synchronization license for each song to cover your legal bases, YouTube doesn't secure or handle rights. Without obtaining the necessary licenses (not including songs in the public domain), you'd be at the mercy of YouTube's Content ID system which could do anything from monetizing the video to downright blocking it depending on the whims of the individual publisher.

Thanks.

I kind of understand YT's content ID https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...d.php?t=670511. I like that YT is being legal; and I'm totally OK with that (in fact, I actaully really appreciate that YT is looking out for the rights).

I've never heard of synchrozation license before today; but now I know. I'm learning a lot of stuff just from this thread.

I guess there's probably not much interest from other members in putting together an album anyway; but if there is, perhaps it should be restricted to original songs only. (I'm just beginning to write my own songs; it's such a contagious thing to do for guitar players.)

Original or songs in the public domain perhaps.
