Very sad to hear the news. Tom has built 4 guitars for me. The first one started back in 2007, and I couldn’t stop ordering Doerr guitars ever since. Over the years, Tom has been a good friend and we talked about guitars and family. His guitars are really great. Real sad… RIP

So very gutted to learn of this. I only spoke with him a few times. He was so easy to talk with and joke with, that I felt like I knew him much better. And, yes, his guitars are absolutely amazing. Such a loss...
Hug your loved ones, everyone.

Terribly sad news
I did not know Tom but I have played a couple of his brilliant creations, and really liked them a LOT.
I have heard and read Nothing but high praise for both the man and his instruments. Deeply felt condolences to his friends and family... Let's all play one for Tom. Paul

What heartbreaking news... Hard to believe, harder to imagine. Tom was a Master luthier, but still a young guy, with enormous promise and potential for a long, legendary career in lutherie.
I met Tom at several of the Healdsburg shows, and had some quality hang time with him at the Memphis show in 2015. We had some custom build clients in common, so we had plenty to talk about. Despite his brilliant skills and the invariably world-class tone of his immaculately constructed and perfectly elegant guitars, Tom was a humble, unassuming guy, and obviously just a genuinely decent and kind human being. What are we going to do without Tom? It's a small and insufficient condolence, but he did make a lot of very special guitars. The History of his instruments is just beginning. So we'll be hearing the name Tom Doerr for a long, long time, and we'll be hearing the sound of his voice in every one of his creations. He put a big footprint down on this Earth, and he will be remembered forever by all the people whose lives he made more joyous and musical with his wonderful guitars.

Oh man, this is such sad news. Much sympathy for his young family.
An irretrievable loss to friends and a gut punch to the lutherie community. You will be so missed, Tom. |

I was shocked, saddened, and in disbelief to hear the news. I had never met Tom but had admired his work from afar. Just recently I exchanged an email with him and he couldn't have been more gracious in his reply, offering his expertise to answer a question in detail.
My sincerest condolences to his family. |

I am profoundly saddened by the news of Tom Doerr's passing. I met Tom back in 2006 after I had commissioned my first custom guitar from him. We had dinner in CA during a guitar show. We shared many conversations over the years on the phone talking about family and of course guitars. He was so kind and so enjoyable. While I live on the west coast, Tom and I shared a passion for guitar building and how it brought so much meaning to life itself.
I will grieve, grieve deeply as we have lost a truly great one in our craft. My heart goes out to his family and all that are deeply affected by this news. Wayne

So very sorry to hear of Tom's passing.
Thoughts and prayers for his Family and Friends. Tom was one of the leaders of the new, and quite brilliant group of young luthiers who are in the process of re-defining the aesthetic and sonic capabilities of the acoustic guitar. He will be missed greatly...but equally remembered and admired greatly for his contributions to this "sea change" in the world of acoustic guitar lutherie, and his guitars will always be a light, his light, shining brightly in our community of acoustic guitar makers and acoustic guitar players. duff |

I admired Tom's work greatly and I liked him as a person despite only having met him a couple of times in the noise and bustle of guitar shows.
I have very fond memories of a parlour size instrument that Tom made with an art deco theme that I encountered during my days as a guitar dealer. I used to play that guitar when I got a quiet moment to myself, I loved it. It was a soothing instrument and I hope it has found a good home. My thoughts are with his family and everyone who loved him.

My condolences to his family.
I am also a fan of his work. I started hearing about him 15 years ago ago and finally got into his build slot half a year ago. |
