Agreed.
Lining = Lining can be kerfed or solid. Kerfing = "I am out in the shop kerfing my lining."

language evolves.
This is a shot of the solid lining being shaped in place with a dremmel drum sanding attachment. Those large linings that support the arm and rib rest are pretty hard to clamp in place if they are preshaped. Last edited by j. Kinnaird; 12-06-2015 at 05:31 PM. |

Every day...
Well, the saying is, every day you learn something. So today I learned it's not called kerfing unless it is kerfed! Duh.
This custom is so much fun!!! Thanks everyone, and keep playing pretty!!! Paul

after the linings (kerfings) have their profile i let in some side braces.
The linings are made of eastern red cedar, (which is actually a juniper for the noun police). A number of years back i was cutting down a large red cedar and in the process of stacking the logs from that tree noticed how musical each dropped log was. Its a very tuneful wood, though maybe a little too fragile for back and sides. It makes good lining and I am convinced that there is very little internal damping, which, Im pretty sure means it transmits vibrations well. The braces are red spruce. The end block is padouk, and the neel is walnut Another view Last edited by j. Kinnaird; 12-06-2015 at 05:37 PM. |

Is that white patch (maple?) on the side for a sound port?

Yes it is. Just a little reinforcement around the sound port. That's probably koa but really any piece of side or back material is fair game for this patch.

Thanks Ken. There is the added bonus of being a natural moth repellant. One less thing to worry about.

Beyond all that, I have to wonder how someone could come to believe that solid linings sound superior to kerfed linings, when the opposite is clearly true! All of this is moot compared to the tonewood choice in this build, which appears to me to be D. tucarensis. I do think it is cheating to use this wood as it virtually takes the possibility of failure off the table. |

I too have wondered if it was D. tucarensis but distinguishing between D. stevensonii is very difficult. The tucarensis wood that I have used in the past is by a wide margin my favorite tonewood. The fact that it smells like cinnamon candy doesn't hurt.
