Getting the "throat" area right is painstaking work, but the carving is all done now. Final sanding will wait until after the frets are in.

Not a whole lot of progress on this project to show right now, but I have gotten a good start on the bridge, and thought I'd show you some of that process.

Slot is done.
For this shot, I used a ruler to show the back-tilt angle of the slot. Last edited by Todd Rose; 01-17-2016 at 09:13 PM. |

I've noticed that some of the photos I posted earlier in this thread don't show up any more. I don't know why. If you want to see all the earlier photos, they are here:

Just when I thought I was looking at a stretch of days in which I could make some good progress on this guitar, something else has come up. A good thing: the opportunity to exhibit a few of my instruments in an art show to benefit the Community School of Music and Arts here in Ithaca.
http://www.arts4all.org/ http://www.artsforallmarathon.org/ I'm thrilled to have my instruments be a part of this show, because it's great to be able to contribute to the fundraising effort for this vital arts organization, and because it's gratifying to have an opportunity to exhibit my instruments as art alongside the work of other artists in various media. (If any of you should feel inspired to help with this fundraising effort, and show your support for my work at the same time, you are most welcome to make a donation to CSMA. Just click on the "donate" button at the top of the page [second link above] and indicate that you are sponsoring me.) Along with the instruments I'll be showing, I'll have a digital photo frame showing a repeating slide show of the construction of this guitar, and then, near the end of the six-week show, I'll exhibit the completed, or nearly completed, guitar in the flesh. Putting this show together is now eating up a ton of my time, so I have only one more photo of just a bit more progress on this bridge to show you right now. The ziricote bridge in the foreground, which is going on another guitar, shows you what I'm aiming for. The wings on that one are shorter, and the ends are angled differently, since it is going on a guitar with a different shape. I vary my bridge shape somewhat to visually integrate better with each guitar shape, as well as to work better structurally and acoustically -- longer bridge for a wider guitar. A little more progress to show...
Sanding to the outline on the belt sander and spindle sander: Then some contour lines are drawn on the outside edges to guide the next steps of shaping: And then I go at it with my other belt sander: ... Until it looks like this: The final shaping will be done with rasps, files, and sandpaper (using a variety of little sanding blocks). Even though it looks pretty close already, a lot of meticulous work goes into taking it from here to the completed bridge. Last edited by Todd Rose; 01-17-2016 at 09:17 PM. |

This seems similar to the issues that bridge builders deal with in terms of tension. In fact, the struts look like the "mathematical bridge" at Cambridge. Rumor persists about this bridge so instead of perpetuating it I'll post the wikipedia link:

Is it that none of the photos in the entire thread are showing, or just the most recent ones?
