Default Larrivee 000-40

Been a year since this baby arrived. Rough delivery/ total blessing.

I know there's no short supply of AGF Larrivee love, but the voice and projection of this guitar is spectacular.

More dreadnought-ish in tone than many dreads I've played... Holds it's own with my 2000 Martin D40 and 1973 Guild D44M.

Would love to hear from any other 000-40'ers. Does it work for you?

Love, love, Love, Larrivee! Own 4 Larrivee dreads.
I've long had an interest in the 000 40 Larrivees. As these guitars are rarer, I have never had the opportunity to play one. Love your description as holding up against a Dread.
I am heavy handed. And an OM sized bottoms out headroom wise for my heavy handed style.
However, I am wondering if the 000 escapes headroom issues being the the bridge is slightly lower on the bout. Maybe this makes the top stiffer and more resistant to the top overloading?
What can you tell me about this guitars shape headroom?

One heavy-handed guy to another:
Yes, I believe compared to my adult son's older Vancouver Larrivee OM-03 (same tone woods - sitka/mahogany) the 000-40's 12 fret's bridge placement, slightly wider lower bout, added lower body depth and the scalloped hybrid bracing (of the 40 series) all contribute to it's dread-ish sound.

The OM-03 is a fantastic OM (no doubt the OM-40 is as well) that does what an excellent OM should. The 000-40 IMO definitely expands the headroom to sound like a bluegrass-y dread on demand. No loss of clarity. No boom. No mush. Loud and crisp. Love it.

Big Larrivee fan here as well. I’ve only played one Larrivee 000, a 000-40R at Gruhn’s in Nashville. That day it was in the top three of the first floor of the shop, beater out only by a Martin OM-28 Modern Deluxe (phenomenal) and a Collings OM-2H. The Larri hung with them both, but with a more fundamental tone than either. As you said, it had power to spare! I’d love to snag one of these in mahogany one day. Just incredible guitars! Glad you’re still enjoying yours!

I believe the "03" Larrivee's are hands down the best value in a solid tone wood North American built guitar. Just my 2 cents...YMMV?

Agreed!

Followed closely by the 40 series!

I agree as well. I love my L03 and if I'd bought the 000-40 I played a few years ago I likely wouldn't have a Martin 000-18. Enjoy it!

Interesting. Does you son play with mediums or lights on his OM-03? My Vancouver OM-03R likes the mediums but can still sound overdriven if I try to play Neil Young style. Heck, even my Martin can be overdriven. I may have to upgrade both guitars LOL!

I am a BIG fan of the Larrivee 40, 50 and 60s series . They hang with the best.

I believe he uses light as a rule (.012 - .053) as he plays a lot of light-touch finger-style, but know he has used mediums as well with no complaint.

My 000-40 likes both. I also like D'Addario EJ19 Bluegrass gauge (.012 - .056) on it.

No shortage of Larrivee love among AGF’ers, but I don’t see much about the 000-40M like mine. Curious if it’s just a less popular model compared to the 00 or OM.

For whatever reason, I think there are more 50's and 60's in circulation?? at least around here.(Nashville)
The 000-60 I played at Gruhns was awesome. When I finally had enough money to make an offer, someone had bought it... Played as easy as a nylon string...I totally forgot it was a 12. It also didn't sound 'boomy' like some rosewoods get.
There has been that 000-44 for sale on the classifieds for a minute and I am surprised it hasn't sold

Yes, I believe the 44 is the gloss version of the 40 (satin).
