Default Wanting a new mic - any recommendations?

I'm currently using the Zoom h2n. My budget is £300, I was thinking of upgrading to the Zoom h4n but I'm unsure on whats out there!

May I add, this is for finger style guitar.

Thanks

I'm a bit confused. I like the Zoom devices but I guess I don't think of them as a "microphone"; rather I tend to think of them as "all in one recording devices". Are you wanting a microphone so that you can plug into a preamp/interface? Or are you wanting an all in one device?

Welcome to the AGF.

I have some comparisons of the H2n against the Sony PCM-D50 and a Rode NT4 stereo mic on my blog: http://www.homebrewedmusic.com/2011/...-d50-zoom-h2n/

I think the difference between the H2n and H4n would be insignificant in sound quality, the difference really comes in the features and connections. The other options offer a greater improvement, but I would call the difference surprisingly small. Still, you can listen and judge for yourself.

If you move in the direction of discrete mics and some separate recording system, you'll have more options for mic placement, pattern, and selection, so if you're interested in the recording side of things for their own sake that's probably where you'll wind up. And of course things get a lot more complicated if you go that way.

Are you doing any post-processing of your current tracks? You can have a lot of fun with a minimal outlay if you're handy with some sort of computer. And that includes phones and tablets these days.

Fran

If you're really looking for a new recorder check out the Marantz PMD661, love mine.

For a mic try a pair of Audio Technica AT4021 mics, great sounding mics at a very reasonable price.

The AT4021 is the last mic I bought, and I really like it.

Are you wanting a new microphone or a new recorder?
