Good input for PC/Audacity
Another newbie question here.
I have loaded Audacity onto my PC. Any suggestions for a good, basic, cost effective set up - Mikes - Input interface I will use the setup to record vocals and guitar. I'd like to have something that might have at least 4 inputs in case I end up recording with a friend. Thanks. |

Behringer mixers work pretty well for the price.....mine has 4 channels, I use two condenser mics and then use the other channels for guitar, etc.

I did my first recordings with a Behringer Eurorack, an SM57, and a pickup.

I did my first recordings (the 02/12...it's new, yes !!) with a Line 6 UX2 and a XLR Mic, it works fine with Audacity (and Lame for export to MP3 files). The UX2 provide two XLR inputs (with 48v power) , Guitar and bass inputs.

Whats your budget? You could get a two input usb or firewire interface for a few hundred bucks, and two mics, and be well on your way.

Don't have a budget, per se. Not trying to produce U2 here (I would go 5 years between discs and have to hire 120 semis to lug around my gear on tour) but would like to produce a good demo CD for a coffeehouse gig or two. What do you think might be reasonable?

You could get a portable digital recorder like a Zoom H2; that would work as a standalone, and you can also use it as a computer recorder. The quality of the mics and preamps is shockingly good, and it is very easy to use.

In my budget-oriented home studio I currently use an M-Audio Mobile Pre for an interface. It is USB powered, provides phantom power and decent sound at a good price.
I have also used an M-Audio Delta 66 interface and was very happy with that as well. A good addition to your recording project would be a small Mackie mixer. I use a 12 channel 1202 VLZ and have been very happy with it. You can't go wrong starting with Shure SM 57 and 58 dynamic mic's. I am also using an ADK Vienna Edition condenser mic and I really like it for vocals and some guitar. Studio Projects makes some fine mics for the money as well, especially their c1. http://www.studioprojects.com/ Have fun! |
