Default New Uke Day! - Outdoor Ukulele

Hi Guys,

I wanted to share some photos of my new Outdoor Ukulele. These are handmade ukes made here in the USA. His shop is in Bend Oregon. His website is www.outdoorukulele.com

I first found out about these ukuleles as I was looking for an instrument to keep with me at all times - even if it meant leaving it in the car. (my daily driver is a 74' Volkswagen) My research brought me to Scott and his unique soprano ukes. Although handmade in the USA they're only $100. Yep, 100 bucks. We both share a love for classic trucks too and although he drives a 1950 Chevy and I drive a 1955 Ford, we were able to work past that. His design is really cool and a few pieces of molded composite polycarbonate. Another interesting feature is the flat back of the neck. It's surprisingly comfortable and frankly feels great.

I just got mine today so I'll a lot more info to share but I'm already impressed and can't wait to travel around with it!

Here are some photos of it.

One on my VW

Here's a comparison of shape next to my soprano Martin uke...

Sound clips coming soon! Again his website is www.outdoorukulele.com

Kindly,
Danny

I got the camo. I watched your vid, and what sold me was a few things, bulletproof, mainly, and it seemed to intonate properly up the fretboard. Good job.

Oh, and it's really cheap.. I'm a uke guy mainly, though I do play guitar as well. Plenty of ukes, but this seems like something I wouldn't be afraid to keep on my truck (work) and play during the day.

Congrats on ordering one, Neal! I just saw the camo run. I plan on keeping mine in the car/outdoors with me too. The price is extremely reasonable. Completely agree.

Danny

I'm in Bend later this month. I'll check them out for sure.

I just ordered one of these last night, thanks to this thread. Seems like a great little uke! I also have one of the gretsch solid hog tenors on the way.

Thanks for this - I've been considering getting a soprano uke for traveling and this was a very helpful review.

It's sound is like most plastic ukes, sort of tubby, a lot of fret slap, and not very loud. I've tuned mine to adf#b just to add some tension and lessen the fret slap, and it has lessened it. Not a negative review, btw. Plastic ukes are what they are, in this case, a pretty indestructible instrument you can take anywhere. The square neck is surprisingly comfortable as well, the plastic frets are not very good for sliding chords up the neck, but adequate for most music. It does intonate well, so chords is chords everywhere. The original strings are fairly bad, not a fan of the D'addario uke strings, but that's just opinion.

My only valid complaint (when reviewing a 100 dollar plastic uke) is the curve on the headstock catches my hand a bit, it's pretty pronounced, should be less severe. Other than that, it's what was expected. Good take anywhere practice and campfire/beach uke.

And you can probably use it for an emergency paddle without damaging it, or if stranded on a deserted island, use it to haul water from the idyllic freshwater pond back to your makeshift grass hut beach home.

You've been watching too much Discovery channel Neal. Interesting concept BTW, and the $100 price tag is hard to resist. Hmmm....

Hopefully mine is sitting at my desk at my office waiting for me. I have a trip to Canada next week and would love to pack it in my suitcase for some playing in my downtime.

Congrats, Matt! Did you get yours yet? If so, how are you liking it?

You should get one, Ted! If not for yourself, perhaps for your store...

Got it, and am just finishing up a trip to beautiful Wakefield, Quebec. Served me well, and I think I sold a few to other guys who were with me. Great little uke, though I do want to experiment w some other strings.
