Very nice. Loved the harmonics in the intro. Guitar and playing are great.

Really fine job, Shadow.

If I had to choose one, I would say this is my single favorite melody in the world. It is SO beautiful. When I participate in song circles, it's hard to go an evening without playing this stunner. It is also wonderful layers of harmonies where almost anyone can jump in.

My favorite singing version is Karla Bonoff's, off one of her early albums. She always closes her shows with it. Singing back-up harmony on that track are James Taylor and J.D. Souther. They hit a note in the last verse that is so beautiful, if will make your skin crawl.

I won't post it here because I don't want to hijack Shadow's lovely version. But check it out.

Thanks again, Shadow. Is that done in standard tuning? I play it in standard tuning in D.

Be Well, Everyone,
Scott Memmer

Thanks for your kind words, Scott.

I've just listened to Karla's version and you're right, it is beautiful.

My version is in dropped D with a capo at the second fret.

Yes, I thought is was in D position, Shadow.

It's funny. It appears you might be using slightly different chord changes that me. There are probably a number of different versions out there.

This song has probably my favorite chord change I know. It occurs on the word "boat" as in, "Give me a boat" and goes F#m > D7 (at least the way I play it), with the F#m on the first two beats of the measure, then the D7 on the last two). My, oh my, it's so achingly beautiful.

Do you do any traditionals like "Greensleeves" or Bach stuff? Sorry, you may have already posted that, but I'm so busy I rarely get over to "Show & Tell."

Again, thank you so much,

Scott

I had to get the tab out to check that. I probably should but often don't know what the chords are when I'm fingerpicking.

There are two key changes in my version. It starts in D. The part you mention goes from A7 for 'give me', G for 'a' then F#m. Then the key changes to G where is goes from D7 to Bm7, key change to C where it's G to Em.

The only classical piece I know is a Chopin Nocturne. I play a couple of traditional tunes, Londonderry Air (Danny Boy) and Shi Beg Shi Mor.
