I'm a solo fingerstyle player but my sound comes from a 12 fret instrument that has a dryer and more fundamental timbre than the usual Braz/German guitars that are popular for the genre.
Either in mahogany or maple

uhhh, newer artists? those have been around for many moons.
i like a lot of different genre other than rap and hip hop, but, i've listened to enough to learn something from them. tone? that is in the ear of the beholder. a country guitar player's tone can be in the blues, jazz or even country nowadays as country pop. a lot of "tone" can be in many genres. play music!

Bluegrass, classic country, folk, and some rock, those are my influences. I like the sound of a good Martin and don't usually go for the lush, piano-like tones. A great D18 is heaven.

I love old time music, fiddle tunes, Americana and such. It's a pretty broad array: Norman Blake, Doc Watson, Tim O'Brien, Jim and Jesse, The Monroe Brothers, Welch and Rawlings, Townes VanZandt, Jesse Winchester, Martha Scanlan, Willie Watson, Jeffrey Foucault, Justin Townes Earle, Cailtlin Canty, Jackson Browne, Neil Young, etc. I used to be way into bluegrass, but not as much any more. I also like bands like the Rolling Stones, Mr Blotto, The BoDeans, Blues Traveler, and the Avett Brothers.
I don't play any electric, only acoustic. I like square and slope shoulder dreadnoughts. I only use a pick, and small guitars don't fit well or feel comfortable in my lap, or I'd own a 000 12 fretter.
