James Curtis Island Prototype Reverse Guitar "Retar"
This very unique piece was made by independent luthier James Curtis Island in Port Townsend, WA in 2003. James personally told us that this guitar was made as a joke instrument. This instrument has the serial number 64. James has since gone on to make over 200 different individual pieces, spanning everything from arch tops to mandolins. Check out his site at: jamesisland.blue !
The timbre sounds somewhere between a small, concert acoustic guitar and a banjo. For a silly, sort-of proof of concept, it doesn't sound half bad. The top is Sitka Spruce, and the back/sides/neck are Mahogany. There is a hidden detail should you peer into the sound hole/side port and look towards the side: a small cutout of a Baroque portrait (specifically: a painting by Dutch artist Frans Hals called The Cavalier in White). In the margins is written, "Sir James says: it's a Retar, my dear." This reverse guitar, or "retar", certainly makes for a good conversation piece!
