Default NGD: Taylor GS Mini Bass!

Excited to finally get one home. Fell in love with them at NAMM. Super fun, easy to play.
Promptly removed the pick-guard. Hopeful Gotoh will make some upgraded tuners for these eventually.

Kudos always for great prices and service from Ted and Helene at LA Guitar Sales. I'm fortunate to live practically down the street from their shop. They always have an awesome selection of stuff. I think this is the 14th instrument I've bought there over the years!

Just read the review and heard the sound samples in Premier Guitar Mag.! What was the scale?
Enjoy!

The scale is 23 1/2".
The action is super low and easy.
I find it responds better with a lighter touch.

A few years back my bass player broke his wrist and couldn't play his full size basses. Me and the other band members chipped in and bought him a Kala UBASS. He loved it and played it for 6 month while his wrist healed.

That Taylor looks to be lots of fun and a great travel bass.
I assume there is a pickup built in.

Yeah. Built in pickup and tuner.
I am a bass player first, and have two of the kala acoustic u-basses also. They are surprisingly good for re-creating an upright type of tone. Their tuners and tuning overall can be a little problematic though

I'm impressed! I have a Taylor 214CE DLX and I think the world of Taylor!
My oldest son is a bass player and I'm really interested what your thoughts are after playing with some other folks acoustically (amped or not...)
He has a Ric & a Jazz but was looking for something to use with "Acoustic Jams"

Please post some samples!

We won't have them in Europe before summer. Taylor has already postponed the first batch because of the high demand in the US.

I recently bought a Harley Benton uke bass. Rubber strings! And it's bloomin' fab. Sounds just like an electric bass when plugged in. Costs less than £150 and is great fun.

Congrats Davwir! So is this one made of cocobolo...?

I have a real question or two for you. In YouTube videos I've seen--including one by Andy Powers himself--I can hear a lot of fret noise. I think this may be related to your comment about it being best played with a light touch? I, too, have been playing electric bass more than acoustic guitar as of late and am wondering whether a GS mini bass should go on my radar.

Also, what can you offer about the plugged-in tone? Thanks!

I wish it had an exotic wood option! If it does well I bet we get a Koa variation eventually (which I would get). I also think a cutaway would be awesome. But I understand trying to keep pricing down to make it more accessible.

Yes, the Fret noise bothers me a bit too, which is why the lighter touch is better. It is easy to generate that buzz playing it aggressively.
I have not plugged it into an amp or jammed with others with it yet. But I did plug it directly in to an interface to do a small recording test. I found the tone knob to be way too bright, I can't imagine it ever being turned up. Once I dialed the tone almost all the way down, it was fine.

I suggest anyone interested in one to go play one (though they are currently still hard to find). I see it as a super fun, light and comfortable bass that has a different appeal and approach than some of the other acoustic and small bass options.

Still waiting for the one I have on hold for my husband to come in. I heard there was a delay from Taylor getting them out to the dealers. Maybe they are getting them out now.

Congrats. I think the removal of the pg was a great idea.
