Default Our long national nightmare is over

The Supreme Court has declined to hear the "Did Led Zeppelin plagiarize Stairway to Heaven's main riff from Spirit's Tarkus" case.

Mandatory content: the intro to "Stairway" is played on an acoustic guitar.

Usually these suits are brought up by somebody's lawyer or their kid.

Well if the Supremes refused to hear it, where does it stand right now?

The group, "Spirit," lost their suit. Period - end of litigation.

That's been back and through the courts already so it doesn't need to be litigated again. IMO

If the Supreme Court refuses to hear it, the lower court ruling stands.

??????????????

I'm sure the Supremes must have heard "Stairway to Heaven". I wish they'd covered it, actually, that would have been great.

It's 'Taurus', not 'Tarkus'!

And Page and Plant are both liars, or at least being very economical with the truth! There's no way Page can claim he never heard it as the first Spirit album was out long before Led Zep made it to the States, where they toured with Spirit, and even covered other Spirit songs. Similarly, Plant's car crash memory loss story... I don't disagree the copyright claim was tenuous, but neither of them covered themselves in glory by their explanations. If Page had just said, "I heard it and was inspired to write something similar", then the debt would have been acknowledged, the copyright experts and musicologists would have had their say and there would perhaps have been closure on this a long time ago. The fact that it has run and run shows that there was reasonable doubt involved: the Led Zep camp just didn't want anyone to steal any of their glory, which is ironic given how much they owed to their influences.

Yup! Tarkus being the title of an album by Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Interestingly, Tarkus was released in June of 1971, 4 months before LZ's album that contains Stairway to Heaven, and (also) includes a song that apparently was plagiarized. From wikipedia: Although not credited, the music to "Are You Ready, Eddy?" was largely inspired by Bobby Troup's 1956 song "The Girl Can't Help It".

Diana Ross doesn't have enough vocal range to cover Robert Plant's vocal parts, even if the song was transposed to a key better suited to her voice. Seriously.

Anyway, before Led Zeppelin recorded "Stairway," the Supremes had already released their version of mind-bending psychedelia with "The Happening":

Now, why didn't "The Happening" ever achieve the same kind of undying fame and popularity as "Stairway To Heaven?"

Some turns of events are just too mysterious to figure out, I guess!

Speaking of vocal range, I'd like to hear Robert try to cover this one...

might end up with the bends and a dislocated uvula. Now that's where it's at!
