Corona Virus Disease
The World Health Organization has officially called this new disease, that is spreading around the world, "Corona Virus Disease" or "COVID-19". There are close to 80,000 people infected with this disease, as of today, and whole cities in China have been quarantined. Many other countries have now got cases of COVID-19. The Diamond Princess cruise ship has been quarantined in Japan for weeks and nearly 20% of the passengers have come down with this disease. The Dow Jones dropped over 1,000 points, today, over fears of this disease affecting world economies. Nobody seems to know how to treat or prevent this disease from spreading. There is no cure at this time.
Anybody here got any thoughts or ideas? Is your area more likely to get this disease than other areas? The disease started in China and in Vancouver, where I live, there are many Chinese people. Everyone is quite concerned. Any ideas what a person should do? Is this a major concern where you live? |

It's Coronavirus Disease. All one word. Otherwise, it sounds like a beer.
We'll have to see if it becomes a pandemic.

We work at an international company and just an hour ago were discussing employee quarantines, etc.

I'm sure medical virologists are studying the coronavirus from morphology to epidemiology looking for answers. I had read recently that there is work being done to develop a vaccine at the University of Pittsburgh (where the polio vaccine was developed).
In the mean time, it's probably a good idea to follow the general safety precautions recommended for influenza, another viral disease spread by aerosolized droplet contact, which includes frequent hand washing, good hygiene and avoiding contact with persons who are ill. From what I've read about coronavirus, most of the fatalities have involved the very young, older adults and those who have a compromised immune system: pretty much the same as with the flu. The mortality rate has been steady at about 2% which is slightly less than what was seen in the 1918 influenza pandemic. Most viruses that spread through the air are inhibited by warm, humid conditions. Hopefully that will be the case, and the spread of coronavirus will soon be slowed by seasonal warming in the northern hemisphere while a vaccine is developed. If you do become ill, it's vitally important to see a physician as soon as possible, as the implementation of hospitalized palliative care can be life saving if your doctor determines that you might require it.

I also live in Vancouver and it certainly has had some effects. 99% of which are caused by misinformation and fear.
#1 - they are pretty sure it is NOT air-borne, therefore the use of masks is mostly useless other than reducing the touching of the hands to face. Or face to hands (i.e droplets from your nose getting on your hands); #2 - people are forgetting that thousands upon thousands upon thousands of people die every single year from influenza, regular influenza. And a lot of them are coronavirus. This one does not appear to be more nasty than what we get every single year; which brings me to #3 - the best thing to do is the thing we should be doing anyway. WASH YOUR HANDS! Some Chinese business are going under because of stupidity touched with a healthy (pun intended) dose of racism. I have been supporting the community by going to Chinese restaurants, and telling the owners WHY I am there. One possibly good thing...I am actually thinking of going on a cruise. Some have dropped off 90% because of fear. Deals are to be had. Be reasonably cautious. AND WASH YOUR HANDS! That is it. Now, the above considered, there ARE real and serious considerations. The effect on, say, the stock market, are real. But like quite a lot of the effects on the stock market, they are psychological. NOT medical. Plus the supply-side chain disruptions due to effects in China are real. But here in North America? Nah, I am not worried at all. But then...I am reasonably cautious and I bloody well wash my hands when I get home (or anywhere) if I have been on public transit. But I do that all year round.

Every time I read about the stock market, I seem to see the word "fear". If the market is going well, then the "fear" is that it can't continue doing well. If ANYTHING happens in the world, then there is "fear" and the stock market drops. What comes to mind is that old saying "a coward dies many deaths".
My wife wanted me to stock up on food when I went grocery shopping this weekend, so I did. She watches a lot of youtube videos and gets all fired up about "dese guys and dose guys" in politics, and now the corona virus. I have no idea what is going to happen to me even for the rest of today, much less tomorrow. I could spend my time worrying, but would rather get real sound information and then decide what, if anything, I need to do. So far, all I have heard on Public Radio is to stock up on food (already done) and stay in touch with family members to work out who will take care of whom if somebody gets sick. If we die, well the neighbors will have plenty to eat. Fear mongering doesn't do anybody any good. Tony

"Via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes." https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019...nsmission.html And the mortality rate is far higher than a typical flu. Although the official mortality rate is still being sorted, it is at least 9 times the mortality rate of a typical flu: "The number of deaths in China is startling, but remember, even a virus with a low fatality rate can kill many people if the number of infections is large. For example, influenza kills 0.14% of infected patients,..." "It’s not surprising that mortality rates for the coronavirus vary dramatically, based on where diagnoses were made, Schaffner said. For example, a report Monday from the Imperial College of London found a mortality rate of 18% for cases detected in Hubei, where only patients with unusual pneumonia or severe breathing problems were being tested for the virus. Outside China, health officials test anyone with a cough and fever who has visited Hubei — a much larger number — producing a mortality rate of 1.2% to 5.6%." https://khn.org/news/facts-vs-fears-...onavirus-risk/ Also, if it's a global pandemic, with so many possible patients affected at once, it could be a stress on the nation's health system and economy. While I wouldn't panic, it should be taken fairly seriously.

I fly through Vancouver a few times a month, including this Wed night when I catch the red eye back east. I had a connecting flight there 2 weeks ago and there were some people wearing masks. I stayed away from them but they may actually be the healthy of the bunch.
Further to fumei's point above, the influenza kills about 650,000 every year globally, but we know about the influenza. We don't know enough about COVID-19 to understand how widespread it can become. |

Masks are mostly effective at preventing you from spreading something you have, not preventing you from getting it from someone else.

Local news said there was a case in our metro area.
It's been very interesting to stay up on the news and learn (personally) plus observe the collective or greater learning going on. Most of the time I ignore a cousin's Twitter feed but not so much now because her career has been in emerging infectious disease research. I noticed some unusually low airfares and wondered if there was correlation or cause.

Looks like the CDC thinks this a question of when not if in the US. Be interesting to see how bad this gets. Hopefully not that bad for any of us here or outside the US.

Olympics are in Japan this July. Olympic Committee is closely monitoring the situation and if there isn't positive news in the next couple of months it'll have to be cancelled.
