Becoming a Luthier??
Hi All: My background: I have been a wood worker since the age of 17. I recently retired & have a complete wood shop in my basement. In the past I have made Gibson Electric guitars from kits and Fender Precision Bases making the bodies myself & attaching necks that I purchased on line. I also installed all of the electronics. I have never built an Acoustic guitar. However, I believe that I have the necessary skills to do so. I recently took up playing the guitar & am presently taking lessons. I am very interested in learning how to repair Acoustic & Electric guitars in hopes of starting a little side business. I have looked into taking on line courses but found none available. The ones I did find only teach you how to build a guitar which I believe I already have the skills to do on my own. My question is: How do I get the experience needed in order to repair guitars? There does not appear to be any on line courses or schools where one can go to get a certification/degree in Lutherie? I have already been told by one Lutherer that there is no such degree. How would I go about learning this craft in the most expedient way possible? Any recommendations or input would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Steve

Attend one of the many schools that teach guitar repair. Do a Google search on "guitar repair classes" and you'll find a number from which to choose.
For guitars, there is no "degree" conferring expertise. Like any other human endeavour, one gains experience by doing. Formal training can reduce the amount of trial-and-error and associated frustration. Last edited by charles Tauber; 04-01-2015 at 09:18 PM. |
