Default OM1 JL string suggestions?

So far I've tried the D'Addario NB's (Came with those.), Augustine PB, and just changed to Retros.

To be honest, I've liked all of them.

Just wondering if those of you that play a Collings Traditional have any other strings you've been tickled with?

Thanks, scott

I’ve got SCGC low tension strings on my OM1T right now and quite like them. I’m guessing this is pretty far afield from what you’ve tried and liked on your JL, though.

Thanks! Yes, those were certainly on my list to try out. Because of the price, I'm almost hoping I don't love them.

Then try Straight Up Strings: https://straightupstrings.com. I use them on many of my guitars, including my OM2HG and my D2HG.

I have a 12-year-old Collings OM1A deep body, and I use D'Addario EJ16 strings on it. When my guitar was built, these were the strings Collings was using for their acoustic guitars.

I have the JL with adi top.

I’ve tried EJs on it and they were fine. For me, maybe not the best fit for the type of music I play most on the JL (which I have found excels at sounds with partial chords and picked lines). The SC Parabolics had a very nice low end but I was iffy on one aspect of the trebles, and so far only on this guitar: there seemed to be a very slight chorus-y effect if I was doing regular-old strumming. But I’m going to try them again. In general I go back to NBs.

I haven’t had a chance to play an adi JL next to the Sitka version. From various internet demos, I get the sense the Sitka models might have a more well-knit overall voice for song-strumming duties. If that’s the case, I’d guess EJs would work well along with the usual other suspects.

These are great guitars and soooo comfortable and responsive! Enjoy your string experiments and the JL.

If you like NB, I think you should also try the Martin Retro. Same type of sound, just a different flavor.

Thanks guys!
Yes, out of the three I’ve tried my least favorite have been the Retros, which surprised me because they have always been my go to strings.

My JL came with NBs and those have been my favorite.

Did just order some Straight Up Strings, so will try those next, followed by GHS vintage bronze (another fave of mine).

Wouldn’t shock me if I ended up settling on the NBs.

Best, Scott

P.S. Yes , this is a fantastic guitar!

Every kind of string I have put on my JL has sounded good. You may end up finding the same.

I can totally see that!

I do enjoy string experimenting, so I am enjoying the journey.

I’d suggest that you try the John Pearse phosphor bronze. They’re an excellent all-arounder string set.
