I think the polytune mode is not very effective. I have never found it to be useful, nor do I think that mode works very well.

Just my two cents.

I'm not a big fan of the Peterson for a few reasons: it picks up EVERY little external noise, it can easily break, and it's too finicky.

I've been using the polytunes now for quite some time. Highly accurate, easy to fold up, and easy to use.

I Love the TC Clip On and agree with Glenn. I don't use the actual "Poly" aspect. But it tunes my guitar to perfection one string at a time better than any others. (I have not tried the Peterson) But I love the long battery life of the TC Poltune and the mono tune version you can get from Sweetwater for $29. I bought a few of the $29 versions. They also tuck away and are the lest noticeable. TC for the Win. IME

As others have commented before me, it's a useless feature because it never works.

I've owned quite a few different tuners both clip-on and not clip-on. I'm quite happy with the Snark tuners. In my experience they work really well and much better than the others I've used.

One measure of their worth is their use by pro musicians. As one example, in many videos of live performances by Molly Tuttle, you can see a Snark tuner hanging out on the headstock of her guitar. If it's good enough for a guitar player of her caliber, it's good enough for me.

The Peterson I had looked like a strobe but wasn't actually a strobe at all. Just a rotating lcd display.
I admit that the polytuner function is, shall we say, overrated......., but used in the normal way, one string at a time, which happens automatically when you start to tune from polymode, it's a brilliant tuner.

I have the TC Unitune, which I believe is identical to the Polytune except for the simultaneous multi-string tuning. It's exclusive to Sweetwater, and it's $30 shipped. It's very easy to read. I have had the original battery in it from January, battery is still good.

Thumbs up for the Unitune.

I have a bunch and the TC Polytune and Unitune are my favorites. But they all work. I rarely use a tuner at home.

I have seen a video of Tommy Emmanuel with a Snark clipped on his guitar. He plays with excellent intonation.

I've got a couple of Snarks that were free with a string purchase. I've found them to be ok - I play in an acoustic duet and I've never had a Snark get me out of tune with my partner. I also have a low, rectangular Planet Waves I've had for quite a while now and I like that one the best - it''s accurate, mounts upside down easily on the back of the headstock and is easy to read. I only use the clip-ons for practice and rehearsal, when we play out I use a floor tuner pedal (usually the Korg Pitchblack) with a battery for the mute function when tuning, to me that is the best for playing out, no need to share your tuning with the audience.

How do you switch the Polytune to strobe mode? Do you automatically get the strobe tuner accuracy in the monophonic mode?

They differ - strobe mode accuracy is claimed to be 0.02 cent, and chromatic (needle) mode is 0.5 cent. The human ear is incapable of hearing that difference, therefore they are effectively of equal accuracy.

FWIW, I never use the polychromatic ('one strum') mode - as others have stated here, it doesn't work - and I never use the strobe mode on my TC Polytune. The chromatic (needle) mode is more than sufficiently accurate - tuning to an accuracy of tiny fractions of cents that nobody can hear is, to my way of thinking, a fruitless exercise, and down that road lies insanity.

The usual disclaimers apply......IMHO, YMMV etc.
