Default Suggest a decent entry nylon guitar

I have some fine steel stringed guitars but my teacher is primarily a classical player and plays nylon stringed guitars.

The difference comes into play with some of the G-string fingerings where my slides are skreetchy and his are nearly silent due to the wound steel on mine and the smooth nylon on his.

So I'm kinda kicking around the idea of getting a nylon stringed guitar. . .

It can't cost more than $500, hopefully less.
I know nothing about classicals so that's why I ask you all.

Yamaha makes several different varieties. Different nut widths, cedar or spruce topped, different back and sides woods, cutaway and standard. Most are below $500. I have never played a bad Yamaha.

Yamahas are good. So are Cordoba and Washburn. You do want a solid top at least.

A Córdoba c7 followed me home today right at 500 dollars. Spruce and rosewood. Compared favorably to a much more expensive Taylor, but I was going for acoustic only and so am indifferent to much of the Taylor amplified charm. Also looked at a c5 with cedar top, but liked the brightness of the rosewood and spruce. Like you I am mostly a steel string player.

Also, I am pretty much ok with any nut width, so the change to 2 inches doesn’t bother me at all except for the more difficult wrap around on the 6th string. A crossover might be a good thing to look at if that matters to you.

Thanks, I think I'd be okay with a wider neck; I have pretty long fingers.

Of course I'll need to try some hands-on to know for sure.

Keep your eye out on the musicians friend stupid deal of the day.

The other day they were blowing out Cordoba c9's for $350. Great guitar.

I have loved all the Cordoba guitars I have played.

I recently came across an old 70's gretsch Dorado that sounds fantastic and cost a whopping $30 at a garage sale.. I brought it home and I have been extremely impressed with it..

Overall can't go wring with a Cordoba. They look nice sound nice and play nice.

Good luck!

The Lucida 777 sells new for about 6-7 hundred , and i see them for about 300 used . They are a spanish made solid wood guitar -ebony bridge and fret board- EIR B+S's , and halfway decent spainish made tuners ( Thou i upgrade mine with German made Schallers )
They have a nice sound -

Kris,

This would be a great choice:

Or cheaper:

I played a number of the lower end Cordobas, all unamplified. My favorite was the Fusion 12. Surprisingly good sound for a thin body. I loved the look of the maple (M12) but the cedar one is cheaper. I also tried a Taylor nylon (unamplified). The M12 was way better than the Taylor.

I have been favorably impressed by the Cordoba C5 and C7.

I also really like the Gypsy King models, which are Flamenco rather than Classical guitars. (still nylon string though)

Yamaha C40 only £120 in UK and a wonderful sounding guitar, the best money I have ever spent.

What is the difference between a Flamenco and a Classical guitar, other than the type of music that they are intended for?

A Flamenco has a lower action, less sustain and plays at a higher pitch, generally speaking.
