Would it make sense to plug an electric guitar to a trained ToneDexter to get a different tone?

I did this yesterday. I wasn't planning on it, just had the electric beside me so figured it would be fun. The tone change was very small. It still sounded like my strat but maybe with a bit of different eq.

They often go on sale for about $20. The downside is the internal foam is made up of 1/2" square blocks that easily come apart. I will be replacing the foam eventually.

The engineer was really impressed with the Tonedexter once he got his head wrapped around what it actually does. He had set up the mics for the session right after we programmed some wave maps and looked at me funny when I said we didn't need the mics! |

I've Dexterized the Fender Strat of one of the players who I run sound for, using a WaveMap trained with one of my acoustics. In that particular case, we both think that TD adds a nice touch. On the other hand, I avoid using TD with acoustics which haven't been used to create a WaveMap for that particular guitar. I've experimented enough with that kind of "mixing and matching" to know that the chances of compatibility are low.

A lot of engineers get rattled because they don't know your plan until you arrive. Tell them what you need as far as hookups, square footage needed for your stage footprint, AC power, etc. when you book it. I've never had a problem doing things this way. Venues are more than happy to put you in touch with their sound person because the guys booking the place and pouring the drinks have no idea what goes into the sound reinforcement. Be clear up front and things should run smoothly. If they hand you a 1/4" cable plug it into the 1/4" output of the Tonedexter and run it through their DI. Have another 1/4" with you for guitar to the Tonedexter. Some cats have actually worked out battery power for their TD in certain situations. |

I still carry the AC power supply just in case.

How much run time do you get on a charge on this battery pack?

I don't know. I've done a bunch of 3-song open mics and used less than a third of the charge.

Based on specs, I'd expect at least 6 hours play time. But it would be nice to know for sure. Perhaps we'll get one and try it.

Seems pretty cheap to get away from the power supply and AC cable, if the Tonedexter is all you have working from it.

I have an older Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable battery power supply that works great with the TD. It would last for at least 4-6 hours.
There are many rechargeable power supplies out there that would work just as well. Davidc |

I'm a finger picker and have a question about the ToneDexter and the Taylor ES2 on my 812CE 12 Fret. One of the things I don't like about the ES2 is how it accentuates the finger noise on the strings, from slides on the fretting hands and from that brushing noise on the picking fingers. Will the ToneDexter address this?
BTW, totally different topic, but I think guitar stores can make some money by providing the learning service for those customers that don't have the resources to do, either equipment or willingness. It would also provide an environment for demo'ing the system. Last edited by raduray; 02-10-2019 at 07:07 PM. |

I agree. That and mic rentals at a reduced rate if you bought your ToneDexter from that store.
