Default Wood pairing question

I've been interested in starting another koa guitar, and I'm thinking about giving a WRC top a try. Has anyone had success with this combination that would push them in the direction of using it again?

Hi Andrew,

That combination is actually my preferred pairing for the 12 fret I offer.
Makes for a very light weight and responsive guitar. If you keep it light enough you can hear your fingerprint on the string!

I haven't done it yet, but i have a Koa and Curly Redwood guitar on the bench for my wife right now. I have high hopes for it! I've played a number of koa, walnut, and mahogany guitars with cedar tops and have been very pleased.

Ummmm, I love Cedar on just about any B&S tone woods. However, I also have built a fair amount of Adi/Koa guitars with excellent results too although its at the opposite end of the top choice spectrum. What body size / style and what is the player's string attack or is it a spec build Andrew?

Thanks for the input guys. Whoa! Mr. Hatcher don't go throwing those kind of pictures into my threads. How am I supposed to follow that with one of my builds?

Mr. McKnight

I haven't found a bad pairing with cedar in any of my dad's builds I've played. Thinking back I can't recall playing one of his that was on koa, so I have nothing to pull from memory, which is usually my base of reference. It's a GC spec build. Thanks in advance.

I've built a number of flamed redwood/koa Om's and I really like the combo especially for a guitar that will be destined for DADGAD or open G tunings, I would expect that WRC would also be nice but I almost never use it anymore, preferring redwood. I do prefer the smell of WRC though

Sorry Andrew,

I'm pretty enthusiastic about that wood combination. I think of Koa as Mahogany on steroids. As a tonewood IMO it sounds better and looks better.
Koa tends to have more sparkle. Also IMO, WRC would be much more highly regarded if it wasn't so easily available and cost more.
Because both woods are so stiff and light you can make a really responsive fingerstyle guitar. I think the color pallet they come in is wonderful to work with as well. I look forward to see what you put together!
