Taylor 614ce Faint buzz on Low E String
My low E string on my 614ce occasionally has an extremely faint buzz (for lack of better words). It's not consistent, but when it buzzes, it does so for a few seconds after plucking the string and then stops while the string continues to ring. It's hardly noticeable at all unplugged unless I put my ear right up to the sound hole, but I can hear it plugged into my practice amp. It doesn't sound like a fret buzz, the string is on the lower portion of the peg above the nut. Some of the factory end pins are somewhat loose, but I can press down on the low E pin and it does not affect the buzz. Any ideas of what could cause this? The neck is straight as an arrow according to my straight edge and the strings a pretty much new (Elixir polyweb custom light 11s). It's so faint it doesn't really affect playing live, but I would like to get it addressed. Looking for ideas before taking to someone.

Is it when the string is open only? Or also when fretted? Does it stop when you get above a certain fret?

First 3-5 frets only on the low E string, the neck is perfectly straight...I'm wondering if I need to add a little relief with the truss rod

That's what I would try.

I'm going to start there....just heard it on the B string at the 3rd fret also and my straight seemed to show an ever so slight back bow when placed by the high E, so I may just be slightly out. Thank you....I'll post back if the issue doesn't resolve. Evidently I wasn't thorough enough in my initial investigation.

It's getting cold out, I don't know where you're located but the lowering temp/humidity may have something to do with it. Do you know what your humidity is?

Has been mid 50s every time I open the case and check my gauge

If the relief is less than 0.003" at the 7th fret, you probably need to add some relief. Relief should be between 0.003" and 0.008" for most players.

Why it could be touching are varied any many, but typically start with, check backbow, check for high frets, check for neck twist. Steve

buzz
Did you fix it?
Sometimes, the nut or bridge string channel is cut flat and can cause the same problem. They should be slightly angled such that the high side is the last part the string touches leading into the fret area. Too wide can also cause buzz. |

I adjusted the truss rod and seemed to have fixed the buzz....feelin' kind of dumb now, but it seems to be fixed.
