This thread was my introduction to DR Rare strings earlier in the year and they are now one of my favorites so thank you to the OP!

I'd be interested to know how old those Elixirs were.

They sound pretty zingy for the first 10 days or so, but then settle down to a good even tone for months to come.

With these type of comparisons the other recording variables need to be carefully controlled. It wasn't in these recordings from what I just heard.

Exactly. The Newtones were lovely, but more subdued than I like. The Elixirs were to metalic/pingy for my taste, but I imagine some people will prefer them for that very reason.

Newtone Masterclass Doublewound are the tone winner on my guitars every time. But you have to order them from UK and they take some weeks to get here. So that's what I do. Great tone rules. These strings are the best to my ear.

I'm a big fan of Newtones but in this comparison I liked the DR Rares by a good margin. Nice warmth and articulation in the finger picking section of the vid.

Great comparison. I'm curious as to how much time there was between putting on a different set. That's a lot of work and I'm guessing you'll reuse the ones you took off. To my ear I liked the DR Rares the best. They were deeper and seemed to be a good fit for maple. I liked the Newtones second and Elixirs third. I'm a fan of all three brands but it depends on the particular guitar. The Elixirs did sound zingy but my guess is that they were new and they should mellow a little after a while.

I don't get it, how can anyone not hear Elixirs sounding clearer less dull with more reverb(overtones) in this comparison ?
Big ears run in my moms side of the family and I have big ears though
I do have some deafness in my right ear for the last 5-6 years.
But in the least the Elixirs are certainly brighter and less muffled sounding.
I do wish the Newton's were better cause I really would like to find a little more flexible feeling strings than the Elixir Nano for acoustic guitar (I have Elixir Nano 11-52 on 3 acoustics)
For this comparison I think the DR Sunbeams maybe the better sounding DR String..anyone who hasn't tried them the lower strings really drive the low notes where I feel them on my chest through the back of the guitar (12-54)
but may not be the case on some other guitars. I have the DR Sunbeams on a
Lowden F 35X Custom Short Scale Adi/Braz. and the DR Sunbeam produces very low lows. But I think this is going to be the last set of 12's I will be using.
Its going to be 11's on that one too.
Would have been good if Elixir made the same Nano Strings they do now on Round Cores to make wound strings a little more flexy.
P.S Great comparison video

Nice video. I wish I had seen this a day earlier. I just put a new set of Martin SP phosphor bronze 12 gauge on my Martin guitar yesterday.

I do think the string type is also affected by which guitar you put them on. I have elixir’s on my Taylor guitar and I do like the sound of them. As in this video they are bright and shiny sounding.

All three tested do bring something different to the table. I might have to try the DR on one of my other acoustics.

Beautiful comparison. If they sound like that in person, the DRs seem like the Goldilocks set. All I hear is the clang of the strings on the elixir set. I’d be curious how the rares compare to DR veritas. Thanks!

They all sounded very good. I love a guitar that sounds good no matter what strings you put on it.
I am in complete agreement with this. Maybe important to note that the low E on the DR strings is quite a bit larger than on the Newtone Doublewounds.
