A.J.Lucas Pavilion Sweep 13 in cocobolo and Sitka spruce
This has been an interesting commission. The customer tried my 12 and 14 fret Pavilion Sweeps (the neck to body joins are actually at the 14th and 16th frets respectively but would be at the 12th and 14th without the cutaway) and wanted something in between and so the Pavilion Sweep 13 was born.
He asked for some inlays in maple which are rectangular fret markers on the side of the fretboard, a pisces symbol at the 12th fret, a Celtic-type design around the soundport and a maple leaf near the tail inlay. The top is Sitka spruce, the back a remarkably flamed pair of cocobolo boards and the sides fairly plain cocobolo. The neck is reclaimed Honduras mahogany, the fretboard Rocklite, an ebony substitute that is rather more stable, and the head veneer and bridge are 5000-year old bog oak. The rosette is made with pieces of spalted beech and walnut. The scale length is 650mm, the machine heads are Schertler, and the finish french polish. |

That's gorgeous. I love the flowing lines of the cutaway and round bottom. Very nice work.

Wow!
I love that Cocobolo of course, but the whole design and execution of the guitar is stunning.
I especially like the celtic trinity knot side sound port. I may have to steal that idea when I commission my next custom build.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the beautiful flow of the upper bout...the way in which you created this continuous flowing line from the top to the bottom...it's very pleasing to my eye...but how in the world did you keep from interrupting the flow of the grain from the back into the heal cap? Was it cut and then joined...or was it fabricated as a singular piece? Wow.....just wow!!!

Thanks all for your kind words.
Wood Knot, I build with a Spanish heel which means the neck is integral to the structure before the back goes on so the heel button can be left on as part of the back. The bindings are then mitred into the heel. I forgot to mention that the nut and saddle are mammoth ivory. |

AJ,
Nice work, I love the "sweep." I had drawn up something like this many years ago, but never got past that stage. It seems like I never had the design where I wanted it and then everything else got in the way. Your sweep seems to have nailed the ascetics, great job. |

I like that a lot, it's a unusual which makes it stand out as unique and it's beautifully crafted.
Nice work! |
