Default 2006 Left handed Martin 000-28 Eric Clapton Signature for 1971 D-28L a fair trade?

Hi Folks,

I am a new forum member, so I hope I am allowed to post this here. I am basically wondering if a trade swap of a 2006 left handed 000-28 EC (Eric Clapton) for a 1971 D-28L is a fair trade for both parties? I cannot inspect the D-28 in person as the seller is in another country than my own. However, I am weary of the trade due to the fact that it's an early 70's D series Martin which tend to have a not so good reputation.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Also, if this is allowed, can I also post pictures?

Hi and welcome. Good to add a lefty! Where are you from?

It's all about condition. If both guitars are sound and not in need of neck work or saddle placement problems, it is a fair deal for both.
The 000 mat be worth a bit more but not a lot.

I know the 000-28EC is in incredible condition, and sounds like a dream. I am just more of a strummer than a finger picker, and miss my D16 dreadnought that I sold in order to acquire the 000-28. The D-28L from pictures seems to be in good shape, and the seller says there are no issues, so I'd have to take his word for it ultimately. He is going to send me some vids to show some details.

If I was able to play the guitar and liked it, then sure, I would make the trade. But an international trade with a guitar i never played....I would walk away.

I think you should do some searches about the Martins of the 1970's. There is a considerable amount to reliable information about problems with 70's Martins.
http://www.bryankimsey.com/70s_D28/index.htm The link I added is from Bryan Kimsey who is a very well respected luthier.

I believe your 000-28EC is worth many more dollars than a 70's D-28 and you run the risk of needing to sink serious money into the D-28 to make it a good guitar. I would be very cautious when buying a 70's Martin.

There is zero chance I would make that trade, even if the owner of the unseen D-28 was an old friend I trusted.

I was hesitant to sell guitars via reverb. But it’s actually pretty seamless. In my opinion, you’re much better off selling the lefty EC on reverb and then buying something else to replace it than doing a blind swap internationally.

Do you really want the other guitar or mostly trying to move yours? I buy and sell a bunch of stuff and personally would be reluctant to acquire a 50 year old guitar sight unseen from another country. For that matter, I don’t do trades - too many ways it can go bad. If I did a trade - which I wouldn’t - I would arrange it so I'd purchase the other guitar, and the other party purchases mine...

I agree probably not a good idea to go with this trade option. Thanks for the advice.
