Old Kay archtop price?
I played an old Kay today at a music shop and was blown away by the tone! What a great sounding guitar! It was in good shape, not perfect, but the action was very good.
Now, they wanted $350 for it. Isn't that a tad high? Oh, I compared it to some new Gretsch archtops and it blew the Gretsch away in terms of tone. My big concern is price and worry about potential neck issues down the line. I almost bought it anyway! Todd

Depends...Kay made a lot of guitars at a lot of levels...they get lumped into the "cheapie" category, as that was their bread and butter, but they made some really nice upper "student level" and "professional model" guitars, many of which sound great...and if you can find one that plays great--well, grab it.
Can you snap a cellphone pic and we can see what model it is? Figure it this way...if that neck doesn't need a reset now, after fifty years of string tension--what makes you think it's going to suddenly have an issue if you buy it? I have a late 50's/early 60's Kay "Master Cutaway" archtop...it has a floating DeArmond pickup...it sounds great...it has a narrow nut, club like neck, and the tiniest frets you'll ever see, so it' not exactly the easiest thing to play, but man....the sound... |

When I went back to the it had been sold. They have an old Silvertone but it doesn't sound as good.
