I bought my Rainsong New in 2012 and after a lengthy round of string tests, I settled on the Martin Monel Retro. String life was amazing, the sound was pure clean acoustic guitar.
The past year the Low E string has been dying faster than is acceptable. Sounding more like a thud. Rope and a wash-tub similarity. I'm changing these strings after 2 gigs. Not normal for their previous history Has anyone else noticed this? ![]()

Not with Martins, but I've had a bunch of bad Pyramids in the last few months (Monel and pure nickels). Possible that their suppliers are the same?

Hi Finger Stylish. Been using Retros on my Rainsong CH-OM for years. I love 'em. I gig outdoors in the summer 4 times a week, they go pretty quickly. But I get more than 2 gigs out of them. I change them once a week. The low E does seem to go first.
I do 2 things to help them last a little, I wipe them down after every set. Then at the end of the night I'll use Fast Fret on them to extend them a little. But any string cleaner should work. Hope this helps.

I had never owned a guitar before or since as picky as my RainSong, and like yourself, I tried a lengthy line of strings. I stumbled upon Retros for my the Shorty about 2/3rds into that journey, but had other strings to finish up. Went back to the Retros as they were just super on that guitar! They didn't take away anything I loved but tamed the overall brightness.
I do remember the low E going thuddy before anything else, but it generally took a long time. Another brand that seems to do this is Cleartone EQ. Maybe reach out to Martin, but I think it is just the nature of some alloys.

Great to hear about these cutting off some of the brightness. I'll have to give them a try when I get through all of my elixirs.

Thanks for the the replies.
I tried a set of: Martin MA535 Acoustic Authentic SP, 92/8, Phos Bronze, 11-52 Custom. Put them on 3 weeks ago. I've done 11 hours worth of gigs since installing including 5 plus hours of practice and they still sound clean and articulate. I'm so impressed I purchased 6 more packs. I have 3 packs of the Monel Retros 11-52 Custom Lights for another day /emergency use.
