Default Feather weight 00 in Spanish Cedar

Here is hoping this featherweight punches above its class.
This will be a travel guitar for Jamie. Stability is key since it’s going to multiple environments.

I had a friend who was a master furniture maker who made all his furniture out of Spanish cedar ( needless to say his shop smelled wonderful )and then veneered the cedar with the most beautiful Santa Domingan mahogany. It had a deep reddish cast and he bought it as sawed veneer. The reality was that his furniture became mahogany veneered over mahogany since Spanish cedar I understand is not cedar at all but in the mahogany family. For the longest time he would not sell me any of that mahogany but he did sell me a few planks of Brazilian rosewood. Long story short, as he reached furniture building retirement, he finally did sell me some of that coveted mahogany. This guitar is made from a Spanish cedar that is pretty enough to carry the show, and the Santa Domingan mahogany has become the inner layer of the laminated sides. Just the reverse of my friends scheme.

The linings are polinia. Light and musical.

I designed this 00 shape years ago after what I thought was something similar to a Gibson L-00. As it turned out, it is a little smaller than the Gibson, but a little larger than the Martin 00.

So pics:

The back shows the trim plan which will be rosewood with fiddle back mahogany purfling and a black line of died poplar.

Jamie is rather fond of Purple Heart so there are splashes of Purple Heart in this tribal rosette along with faint green accents. So, Purple Heart, gold fiddleback, and green accents for a Mardi Gras rosette.

You can see the mahogany inner layer

A rough idea of the shape

Thanks for looking

That’s a fun rosette John. Can’t wait to see that grain pop under a finish.

I am super fond of my Spanish Cedar JK Mitchell/Jumbo! As John knows…

This will be very interesting to follow. I expect Jamie to be stoked!

Thanks Paul. You probably remember you sourced this cedar for me when you put me on to the set that I built yours with.

Congratulations Jamie!
Can’t wait to see this come together.
Certainly looks fantastic already. Love that warm cedar tone. (and John’s builds)!

Thanks Dennis. I don’t know about breaking that record. I suspect Bruce has that pretty well sewn up.

Very cool rosette. The Purple Heart is a nice touch.
Like everyone else, I’m anxious to see that Spanish Cedar under finish. I
Bet it glimmers and shines with depth, like a new gold bar. Beautiful wood John.

Smile Link to the BIG SC JK

Here is a link to the build thread for my Mitchell/jumbo in sister SC wood. I hope

https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...=553751&page=8

Plenty of pics in this thread for wood (and beautiful build) drooling…

This axe is my fave for slide, as the BIG, deep body provides a ton on lows to offset the inherent highs when sliding.

Thanks again John! You RAWK!!!

Paul,
your SC JK is gorgeous! I love how the SC looks under finish. And yes, Jamie is already stoked to have JK #4 coming (you have some competition!). Combines two of my favorite trees: Spanish Cedar (those suckers can get HUGE in the wild, and are very beautiful) and Redwood (the most beautiful tree where we live). Jamie

Cool digging Paul. I'm enjoying revisiting that build and seeing pics of some older work.

Yikes, number 4? really? I remember building 2 but not 3. Oldtimers has struck. There is some tedious side bracing to do today and then top and back brace carving before this box gets closed in.
