I am definitely slowing down, but not by much . . . yet.
Here is the BRW back of the current build, bound with Cocobolo sapwood, and purfled with b/maple/b. This is a really beautiful set of extremely well quartered and straight grained material with a lot of color variation. ![]() Last edited by Bruce Sexauer; 04-18-2022 at 05:04 PM. |

I started using Cocobolo Sapwood in place of Ivoroid plastic binding several years ago. The first such was the BRW single 0 I made for Bob Berger (2/5/1). It can be challenging to find the material as it usually gets thrown out after being trimmed off of the heartwood. I no longer seem to have a piece big enough for a heel cap, so I used a piece of Ebony sap wood I've had laying around for a few (20?) years.

I have completed the woodwork on the new D 28-ish. Here it is with sealer coats only, pore filler still to come. Very close to the final color density.

Looks great Bruce. Hard to tell from the photo but it appears that the top has some interesting color, reds and greens possibly. Is that the case in person?

I've seen a couple of amazing D-28s... and lots of good ones, I even owned two
good ones. High End Wood + Sexauer might = "lots of mojo"... Bruce, I guess even though this isn't a commission, it is probably already promised, or is probably meant to be offered at the bluegrass festival? -Mike |

I am building this to wow them at the CBA Father’s Day Festival. They are a tough group to impress as they are EXTREMELY Martin centric. After years of trying to crack that tiny local market, the last couple of years found me placing a few of my dreads in the local scene. The trick has been to get local players to even pick up my work. I feel a bit like Charley Brown dealing with Lucy’s football but this might be the year.
It’ll be another 6 weeks till I’ll know the guitar is as good as I expect it to be. If a buyer shows up before then, I won’t quite have time to make another before the show, so delivery will be creative time-wise. I have the second coat of varnish on today. |

I don't usually post pictures during the finish process as the changes are rather subtle. But the difference is less subtle this time between the previous "sealer" pics and the ones here with the first coat of varnish.
I think this top is fantastic: ![]() ![]() ![]() This is the ebony sapwood logo inlaid in BRW: ![]() |
