Default Some John Dowland Lute music in Dadgad

I have been busy over the last few weeks arranging some John Dowland lute music in Dadgad (Dowland was an Elizabethan lutenist whose music is just sublime).

This piece is barely over a minute long but is utterly wonderful and a joy to play in this tuning. I have recorded this on my two steel string acoustics, firstly my Huss & Dalton and then my Brook Lamorna.

Apologies if some of my artistic decisions upset the historical practice brigade (more likely to be hard core classical guitarists than steel string players) but as I say in my notes, I play this the way I want!

Hope you enjoy it

Super smooth. Obvious you love the song. And do with it what you like. We are all interpreters bringing our own accents.

I like Dowland too. Your arrangement is lovely and I love the colors you bring out with it.

Thank you. Yes, music would be boring if we all played a piece in the same way. I think the important thing with this ancient music is to keep it alive.

Dowland is a truly wonderful composer, and there are many many fine interpreters of his work on the lute you should check out

If thats your first exposure you are in for a treat if you search for performances of his music on the lute.

As anyone who has checked out my Parlando Project stuff might guess, I got into him not only for the music, but because he set a lot of Elizabethan era poetry (some may be his own) to lute music too. Some of the songs are fine musically and lyrically.

Sting did an album of that era's lute songs a few years back. He got a lot of pseudo-corner responses for that, but I recall it was pleasant.

OK, here is a little bit more that I recorded today. I think this is an absolute masterpiece- hope I do it justice.
