Smile Always use a new battery!

Long story short. New guitar (to me). Got it last night. Belcat preamp not working. Put in a battery from another guitar preamp. Still didn’t work. Took everything apart. Checked all cables. Put everything back together. Went out shopping. Bought brand new batteries. Put one in. Preamp worked.

Simple lesson. Use new batteries before getting the screwdrivers out!

Thanks, Ady Baby! Another affirmation of good advice!

Smile Right!

Excellent advice

Or, be like me and use zero batteries…. K&K passive on the rare occasions I plug in.

I still take new spare batteries to amped gigs, just in case some one wants to sit in.

Saved a hassle a couple weeks ago!

Cheers

Paul

And - before you check all cables, connectors etc. - check if the new battery has enough power. There are new ones that are empty! We all have a built in voltage meter, our tongue. After a short training you will know the exact voltage within a second or less.

A small battery tester is a must-have in your gig box!

9v batteries being an almost unavoidable fact of gigging life, I invested in a circuit tester and check all batteries before each gig. I chuck any battery that reads below 9v.

A tongue works almost as good as a battery tester

Default 9volts!

I had a very similar issue with my 2006 Taylor GS last week. Was getting nothing through the PA... Had no extra batteries to I swiped one from another guitar (that was working). Plopped it in the Taylor... NOTHING.

Well a quick trip to the store to pick up a pack of 9vlts and the problem was solved.

Was interesting that there was enough battery juice left to work in my EC Fender but not enough for the Taylor pickups.

Yes. I have a battery tester. Before any lengthy gig I test the battery in the chosen guitar.

I have seen this happen way too many times at open mics, especially with batteries in guitars that require string de-tuning (or removal) to access the battery.

I use passive pickups, and my pedals are set up to use either an external battery or a power block, both of which I carry with me.
