Headway EDM-1 v.1 battery light

I picked up one of these used - the first version with the turn knobs not the H.E. with the sliders. When using battery power the low battery indicator lights even when using a new battery. Is this normal?

The light is blue. The manual says that the light will show purple when the batter is low. Maybe it shows blue under battery power and turns purple when it's low?
