Default Nick Berg

About the time I was starting to record music years back I composed a melancholy piece regarding the sad case of what happened to Nick Berg.

Nice piece. Pretty specific horrific story to try to tell without lyrics, though. It could really apply to any sort of melancholy story.

Nick grew up just down the road from where I’ve lived for the past thirty years. His Dad was/is a pretty hardcore cycling advocate who I met with a few times and almost sort of knew (I was a transportation planner and a pretty hard core cyclist also, so our path’s crossed a number of times) in the years around when Nick was killed. Such a horrible story. His Dad was kind of an odd guy to begin with, but after his son’s death he got really detached. Really tall skinny guy you’d always see around town riding his bike with extremely narrow handlebars. And anyone who knew who he was (a lot of people, given the press coverage at the time) would just feel so sorry for him, for what he’d been through. I never met Nick, but I saw some of the devastation that kind of violence leaves in its wake…

Thanks. The recording was over six minutes in length as a mood piece but too long in most cases so I faded it out here at about the mid point.

Very nice and evocative piece. And fading it out in the end was a tasteful touch, and effective when used wisely.
Yeah, that sad event happened nearly twenty years ago.
Thanks for sharing Rick!

Hi Derek,

Really enjoyed this -- I could hear the melancholy theme, but also quite a brighter transition towards the end of the piece...

Lots of compositional elements in this one, you made a complex piece seem easy.

Thank you for sharing
