I would not be happy if I were not able to do both. For an audience, words carry the most interest and you have to be a far better player than I am to carry off a performance strictly instrumentally. So I add occasional instrumental breaks to songs and get the best of both worlds. Maybe I have 50 instrumentals I can carry off - and hundreds of songs.
At home, it's a more equal mixture. Some times I only want to sing and at other times work on instrumentals or just noodle around and see what I make up.

I’ve always considered myself a singer first and a player second. My playing has gotten better over the past 7-10 years as I’ve started playing out again (BOOOO 2020!) but don’t have anywhere near the chops of some of you guys!
Still, love that fact I can make music!

...I have always been both...but I am probably considered mostly a guitar player by my musical associates...

Assuming this definition is accurate, which I would pose is debatable, I would consider myself a song player. I picked up the guitar at 48 wanting to make a pleasant sounds and play songs that I liked. A fairly simple goal that can be a lifetime journey as we all know. Truthfully I don't know how you can be one without the other - although I, for one, don't sing along - I just play.

Perhaps the terms you are looking for are “instrumentalist” versus “vocalist”.
A human voice can be as much of a musical instrument as any other. If one is primarily a singer, ones instrument is ones voice. Often additional dimensions can be added to the voice by adding accompaniment, much like any other instrument. The accompaniment can be as simple or as complex as one desires. One can also provide ones own accompaniment. That can take many forms from a tambourine to an autoharp to a guitar. One need not necessarily be a virtuoso instrumentalist to provide that accompaniment. |

Yup. I've watched skilled players who are acrobatic…but not musical…but not for an entire song. |

As a teenager I learned to basically strum chords
to accompany a friend who would sing. Later on, I discovered the joy of arpeggios and as I got some money to afford a solid wood, I soon turned to fingerstyle. I forgot how to hold a pick ! So, I became an intermediate guitar player who cannot sing !

Markd you should be proud. You are a performer performing. Largely people are not all that entertained by someone playing guitar. As a guitar player that started singing so I wouldn't have to put up with singers I'd say you got it figured out. I enjoy playing guitar but find that the fancy stuff has more purpose when involved with singing. As much as I enjoy playing I realize playing fancy stuff isn't needed or appreciated by audiences. The playing is for guitar geeks not for the general public looking to be entertained.

I do not play very well and I sing even worse. Guess I would be considered a "hack".
That said, when starting this journey, at age 58, I just wanted to learn songs that I can play and sing to. I play for my own enjoyment and recently have been getting together with a new neighbor/friend and learning a lot from him. I will probably never learn music theory nor cool leads and solos, but thats ok. I am enjoying what I am doing, and thats what it is all about. As the Isley Brothers sang...It's your thing, do what you want to do"

I love it. Had a Jack Russell Terrier that enjoyed my music, but my lab/hound isn’t a fan. The lab probably had better taste.

I went in a big circle: started out playing, singing and song leading as a summer camp counselor. Switched to bass and played all the Boston clubs in the '80s. Spent the 90's and 00's playing blues and complex finger-style ragtime (i.e. Rev. Gary Davis).
And now I'm back to playing songs. |
