Default The Goldilocks principle.

What's size is somewhere between the GS Mini and a big old dreadnaught? What is a good medium priced example of said medium sized guitar?

Lots of choices - depends on what maker. Taylor has a nice guide on their website that gives specs and recommendations for each of their sizes. I think Maury's Music does the same for Martins.

I like smaller guitars most of the time, and short scale, 000 or folk size, is in my Goldilocks zone.

I'd choose a Taylor Grand Auditorium...

On the Martin side of the fence, check out their 00 and 000/OM models.

For me, the Goldilocks zone is around a 00, or a Taylor GC, or Breedlove Concertina. Perhaps you could be more specific as to what medium price means, since that varies a lot between people.

You might want to try a Taylor Academy 12 or a pre-owned 300 series GC body Taylor.

The Taylor GT series has been getting mixed reviews, but don't leave it out as another pre-owned option, although they will be harder to find.

If you're a mahogany person the Taylor 322 is super as a pre-owned guitar, or possibly a pre-owned Guild M-20.

There's always the pre-owned Martin 00 guitars, too.

The Yamaha FS5 or FS3 or Eastman E10-OM-TC are good candidates IMHO.

The learned version of the "Goldilocks Principle" is what behavioral researchers call a range effect. When experiencing similar manipulatives that vary in size, people general prefer one in the middle of the range. I happening to be experiencing this right now as I have taken up electric bass with some degree of seriousness. The scale length of my GS mini (the guitar I play the most) now feels ridiculously tiny, and my regular scale instruments now seem like the GS mini. Perhaps you (the OP) could make use of this principle.

Of course trying to reset your financial range via repeated experiences with large expenditures might not be such a great idea...

As you know I have a GS Mini. I don’t own a dreadnaught but have played many of them, I own a Larrivee L-01which is as close to dreadnaught size as it gets. My Martin 000-15 is a great “Goldilocks” size. Richer, fuller and more complex sounding then the GS Mini and feels noticeably smaller then the L-01.

An Eastman in OM size would fit the bill nicely and you can find them in your price range. The Yamaha FS3 is another stellar instrument to consider.

A Martin 000 or OM, or Yamaha or Eastman equivalent is still a small guitar.

A Martin GPC or a Taylor Ga or a similar guitr from the others is more of a ''just right'' size. It will give a fuller sound with comfort or a smaller guitar.

I've now got a size "0" (Eastman E20-P), an 00 (E40-00m and 000 (Collings 0002h) and a dread (Collings DS2h).

No more "whose been sleeping in my porridge!"

Choose the size of the tool for the job you need to do.

Probably something like a Taylor GT. That one is in the lower side of a grand

It took me a bit of experimenting to find my range of shapes and sizes that meet my tone demands as well. I have a deep body grand concert that hits my sweet spot. I also own a 00 and a slightly scaled down slope shoulder. I love these better than a dread or a parlor and my body feels more relaxed in this range as well.
Best,
Jayne
