Default OM-ish size with 44mm nut width

Hi

It's been a while since I've been on the AGF but it's nice to be back and read through the current threads. Just wondering if anyone could suggest a small bodied acoustic for fingerstyle playing with a 44mm nut width? Budget is around £3000 ($4000). I don't really have any other requirements but a 14 fret neck join and cutaway would be preferable.

Thanks!

Sounds like one of the higher end Stonebridge or Furch guitars would meet your needs....

Hi ksw
I'm trying to discern if there is something different-than-usual you are asking for when you say 44mm.

A 1¾" nut…44mm is slightly less than 1¾" and 45mm is slightly more. It's the string spacing that matters.

A 1 ¹¹⁄₁₆" nut…42mm is slightly narrower, and 43mm slightly wider.

So I'm guessing you are wanting a 1 ¾" nut?

So a 1¾" nut, 14 fret guitar is pretty frequently found in OM and 0, 00, or 000 sized instruments.

Actually you can find high quality small bodied instruments with nut sizes which range from 1¹¹⁄₁₆" - 1¹³⁄₁₆" nut.

Most USA built guitars (non-classical, 6 string acoustic) are described in inches/Imperial measurements, whereas classical and european guitars (and Canadian companies like Seagull) are often expressed in mm.

I have 3 luthier-built guitars with 1¾" nut, and the strings are spaced on them plus or minus ⅟₆₄". In other words, one is exactly 1¾" and one is ⅟₆₄" inch narrower, and one is ⅟₆₄" wider.

I cannot feel the difference between them.

Hope this is not confusing. Just want to know what you are looking for…expressed in inches/Imperial…

Many of the Euro and some Pac rim guitars like Maestro are 44-46-48mm. I'm guessing the OP is in Great Britain from the reference to "pounds". Maybe just what they are used to.

Which brings another builder to mind - Brook guitars

Check out the Brook ‘Lamorna’ - OM size, 44mm nut-width, hand-built in Devon in a small three/four man shop, beautifully-built and beautiful-sounding guitars. Here’s mine, European Spruce/EIR with Walnut bindings...

You could also consider the ‘Taw’ or the ‘Torridge’. Project Music in Exeter and Coda Music in Stevenage are dealers, but Brook will also deal direct with buyers.

And, of course, it’s good to support a British business.

There are a few that come to mind if you are looking for an exact match to 44mm (1.73"), which is referenced by some brands as 1 23/32"(1.718"). I'm sure there are others especially in the custom build and boutique brands.

As mentioned in previous post, Yamaha in the Red Label and L Series LS. Alvarez in the Yairi line. I would guess the Godin brands might have something as well. In my opinion, the Larivees and USA Breedloves feel pretty accommodating if you have to go to 44.5mm (1 3/4") due to their neck profile. The Furchs at 45mm also feel pretty accommodating to me in the first few frets.

Also, as has been noted, you may have to get 44.5mm or greater to get nut string spacing and a bridge string spacing you find preferable. It seems a lot of folks prefer at least 1.5" nut string spacing and 2 1/4" bridge string spacing for this style. To get this, it is most likely you would be looking at 44.5mm or greater. Of course, others are fine with narrower spacing. Good luck finding the right one for you.

Best,

Mac
