unmder 1000 8 string resonator
what square neck resonator for under 1000 would you recommend that is 8 string sounds good and made from all solid wood? I see DeNeve resonators going for around 600-1000 used, what is his new price and does he still make them? Any other brands I should look at? I'm VERY willing to buy used.

Just a quick comment - solid wood is not really a big deal with resonators. The cone makes the tone.

I know solid wood is not big deal with resonators 90% of the sound comes from the cone spider and baffle construction. But, solid wood is still a deal and 10% of the sound still comes from the wood. I demand all my instruments are my of solid wood. Plywood is for sheathing on homes not musical instruments.

I don’t know of a reso maker that uses solid wood. National doesn’t, the top and sides would (wood! ) have to be pretty thick and robust, canceling out any tone advantage. But hey, I’m no guitar builder.
It is entirely the cone and construction, and this is just opinion, the body tone differences would be from the type of metal used, or wood. Shape and 14-12 fret, etc. A koa veneer Estralita, for instance, will sound pretty much like a mahogany veneer Estralita, which will sound a bit different than an El Trovador of the same configurations. But again, I’m no expert, so maybe one will put in about a nickels worth. Plywood, IS a horrible, horrible word when it comes to instruments. So let’s use “veneer”! D35 had a solid flat back, the 25 had a “veneer” back, no bracing..both excellent Guild guitars.

Millions of players and scores of instrument makers have proven you wrong, I'm afraid.
Besides, there is a huge, huge variance in quality and uses between different types of plys and laminates...many are used to make high-end, top shelf, quality musical instruments, and have been since before our great-great-great-great grandparents were born.

While more true of post and baffle construction than of soundwell, and particularly true of the back is braced so it is free to vibrate, the type of woods that the back is made of most definitely "colours" the tone. A maple backed instrument, for example, might be midrangy and punchier, while Mahogany might be warmer and darker. In his price range, I am not sure that helps the OP in their quest. But solid woods can effect tone. |

Plus that guy who made the one you have for sale, looks cool.
Everyone has their expectations and requirements, yours is solid wood on a reso, so looks like Beard or Sheerhorn meets those. |

Thw extra two strings can be what ever notes you want. I don't tune my reso GBDGBD I tune DGBDGB or CGCEGC
I would probably tune an 8 string G1 D2 E2 G2 B2 D3 G3 B3 I am getting an all solid wood Richard DeNeve resonator. Only 6 string but this was a Christmas gift from my parents and they told me to pick one out and time was running out so I picked it . Solid maple top Solid black walnut sides and back. |
