Thanks for doing this, Jeff.

I know some basic theory, but have trouble applying it to the guitar, especially on the fly. Fretboard freedom sounds great!

Wrote out my first fret board diagram today. Very helpful.

Question of Jeff: Did you write the notes between as sharp or flat or both?

I like to know them as both, even though most of the time in a key signature, I'm dealing with flats.

I'm in, but only on Fridays and weekends until 4/15. I can't do 3 times a day though at any time.

It's under 1 minute of "guitar in hand" each time.

I've done the fill-in the blank fretboard layout thing a few times on my own without it really sinking in.

I'll give this a try. I need some direction to help bring the fretboard territory outside of cowboy chord country into aural focus !

It will be interesting to see where you take this Jeff.

I think the fill in is a good start with repetition, but you're right, I don't think it sinks in on it's own. Hopefully some of the other things I have planned will help it "click" for you.

If you think knowledge will somehow hurt your creativity...please join us!

Assignment one: pick one tuning to work with. I think standard is best, but if you prefer something else, go for it.

Part 1. Write out your fretboard diagram...every note, every fret (at least 1 thru 12) every string, every day this week. Actually physically write it out. No need to be anywhere near a guitar.

Part 2: spider fingers...on each string, play open, 1st fret, 2nd 3rd 4th, open index middle ring pinky...say the names of your notes as you play them. Then backwards, pinky ring middle index open...At least 3 times a day. Morning, after work, before bed...or whatever. But at least 3 times.

Part 3: keep playing songs and having fun and doing your normal stuff. This stuff is a supplement to making music, not a replacement.
What a great idea, and a fun and constructive way to really learn some useful information, regardless of what we all each like to play for music.
Definitely in! and thank you in advance for your time and effort in helping all of us improve our knowledge.
I too will be doing this in standard tuning.

Sounds interesting. I think I will give it a try. Never thought of this . I hope us "old guys" can learn from this too!

Trying to get a better understanding by drawing it all out with a pencil. The drawing is more fun than reciting the notes up and down strings, but that part is probably more essential to actually learning. Combined, hopefully will be useful in the end.

I wanted to do this in multiple tunings. I think I see where we're going so maybe for now standard is best. Chromatic visualization of the fretboard and later triads of chords and then pick a chord and "see" all the roots, 3rds and 5ths.... Ok, give me until 4/15. This should be good.

Yeah, I'm not saying you can't eventually do this in multiple tunings...but this is a deep dive into ONE.
