We need pennies.

Without them we can't have these:

Nowadays, each one of those usually costs 51¢, but if we got rid of pennies that would increase to 55¢ (they'd use nickels, instead). What you see in that photo would cost an additional $1.

Keep the pennies...

Does that mean you are not in favor of eliminating one dollar notes?

I was at a Goodwill store a few months ago looking at books and I found this as a bookmark in a book, a Hawaii $1 bill. I bought the book for $1.29.

Where I live the one dollar and two dollar notes are long gone.

Five dollar notes are still handy but I wouldn't mind replacement with coins.

Decades ago on my first trip to France I was very impressed with the 20 franc coin which was approx $2 then and equiv to $10-12 today. It was handy for vending machines at airports, train stations and malls that carried a wide range of stuff: travel tokens and tickets, sandwiches, desserts, travel guide books, toiletries, electric plug converters, alarm clocks, watches, electric razors, hair dryers, disposable cameras, pocket radios, toys, etc. (today they'd read euro notes).

Cheers.

Pretty sure those go for anywhere between $20 and $100.

Not a bad score!

Yea. Mine is badly wrinkled but no rips. Closer to $20 for sure.

I use mostly one credit card but still carry between $100 and $300 in "emergency cash" in paper money in my "Smallet" (small thin front pocket wallet) .
Coins are of no real use to me

I only use credit for ~$50+ purchases. All incidentals are done in cash. I always keep a stash of change in my pocket for making change.

Coins, including pennies, are important to me.

I make so much money being a guitar player I just carry a Crown Royal bag full of diamonds around & toss a handful or two to whatever servitor does my bidding.

Yeah I'm kind of a big deal.

The Covid situation has changed the public mindset about cash.

Stores now all refuse cash and we use swipe cards for everything.

In my city our parking meters mostly take cards, but they are a tad primitive. The only ones that demand cash are by the leisure centre. This will have to change.

I never carry coin now and used to have a small leather purse with parking change and a spare £10 & £20 hidden away, but it was stolen from my car one night along with a Razr non smart phone.

I think I've had the same £20 in £5 and £10 notes in my wallet since before lockdown!

I've yet to come across a store which refuses to accept cash. They recommend cards, but they don't turn down cash money...

Wow. There aren't any people in the UK who can't afford credit/debit cards? There's lots of people in the US who can't.

+1. I use credit card for everything (and pay full when I get the bill). I too carry at least $100 in my wallet just in case. I don't like coins either.

Why is cash bad in regard to covid?

I understand that currency being handled by various people can/will get plague particles on it - but don't the cards and cardswipe machines also get those?

Basically, to be careful - anything you touch in the public domain is in question. Every door handle, product, credit card swipe machine (that you need to type your zip code into and touch it somewhere to confirm transaction amount, etc)...

Don't really see how handling cash is any worse than any of these things... And by the way, I'd think that copper-plated pennies would be the SAFEST thing to handle, given copper's anti-microbial properties!

I’d love to post some photos of paper currency that I have, but don’t know how. I’ve often struggled with photo posting. Would someone tell me how again? Thank you.
