Post Nova Scotia Parlour Guitar

Hello everyone! I’m new to this forum, but I have been building a parlour guitar out of all Nova Scotia wood, and have been videoing the process.

I’m hoping to continue posting the process online and will update you all here. So for now I’ll leave off with an episode where I installed the binding, let me know what you think!

A big welcome to Daniel, a brand-new sponsor here on the AGF. Hope you enjoy it. We'll be looking forward to watching and then hearing your parlor as the build progresses.

Default Update. Thinning out the binding

Hello everyone! It’s me again, I have an update for you about my latest build!

I have been thinning out the binding, looks like my router jig was not set right however, so I’ll be binding it again soon, I’m going to make a new router jig, the one I used relied on the back being flat (which it isn’t) so it had some errors in the channel that I didn’t see. My next jig will be much different.

But here is a picture of my guitar in the vice, let me know what you think in the comments down below!

Default The back before installation.

I wetted the back before installation. It is cherry birch, and curly maple. Hope you enjoy!

Daniel, Welcome to the AGF! Great to have you here. I just checked out your website and FB page. Looks like you're in the Valley, not too far away. Perhaps a visit to the shop this summer if you're interested.

Just watched the video. I'll be following the build. I didn't catch the woods used. How is antler for the nut/saddle compared to bone as far as durability and tone goes?

Oh that’s neat. I’m in the south shore actually. Just outside of Yarmouth. The woods are cherry birch for the back and sides. It’s just the core of a birch tree, but this tree was so large that the core is very nice. And the top is red spruce.

All of the wood is from the province and is stuff we cut at my fathers saw mill.

I have never used antler for a saddle, but I use it for nuts a lot, it is quite dense and gives a nice tone so I can only imagine it will be a nice saddle. I was told it would be good.

Thanks!

Daniel,
I'll spend some time later going through your videos. I'm quite interested to see what you've done with all Nova Scotia woods.

My grandparents on my father's side lived in Yarmouth, so I've spent quite a bit of time there. My grandmother moved to the prairies a couple of years back to be where my father and uncle are now living.

My family and I are moving back to Halifax this summer. We have family down through the valley and beyond (Middleton and Digby), so we're down there regularly. Given that I do a small amount of building, it might be something to try to organize a meet up sometime in the future. It sounds like there may be a few builders around.

That’s really cool! We should definitely figure out a meet up some time, I’m in Yarmouth county. Have to wait till the virus passes, but that would be fun!

Episode 15 is out!

Had to redo the binding. Looks much better! I plan to add an arm bevel and cutaway scoop since I had some tear out.

Default Update

For anyone not following my posts on Facebook and Instagram. I am adding a small harp inside of the parlour guitar to add resonance. It’s just an experiment for myself.

In this episode I cut out the sound/access holes.
