Ren Ferguson Guitars -- update
For those of you who have asked over the past few years, wondering about Ren Ferguson's whereabouts and activities since he left Cordoba, here's a bit of an update.
After Ren left Gibson, he went and worked for Guild/Fender; following that, he consulted at Cordoba in California, working "just down the street" from his old buddy Jean Larrivee. He left Cordoba after a spell, and returned to his place in Montana. He remained fairly quiet/under the radar for sometime, but told me at that time that he was planning to build guitars again under his own name. (Way before he worked at Gibson (starting in the late 80s), he built a number of Ferguson instruments -- banjos, guitars, etc.) So for the last few years, he's been tooling up in his workshop, getting set up, and working with his son Tim, who also is a builder of instruments with strings. It seems the talent lineage continues.... When I first caught up with Ren very shortly after he departed Cordoba, I asked him about his plans to build Ferguson guitars, and got on his 'build list'. Whenever we met/talked, we would discuss various guitar concepts, and despite his offer to build me a blinged-out tour de force guitar, I expressed that what I would like is something fairly simple, aesthetically, but sonically a tour de force. So we worked out a design, selected woods together during a visit, thought about various design elements, and he and Tim are working on that for me now. However, in the meantime, he elected to move a couple of other projects ahead of mine, just to "get the word out there", and he sent me a few photos of those the other day, which I thought some of you might enjoy. These are the first two Ren Ferguson guitars produced since he parted ways with Cordoba. I will preface by saying I do not have a build spec for these, other than they're built with Brazillian back and sides that was cut back in the 1970s, with a red spruce top, but I'll provide a few photos. OO-NY: Here is a Ferguson Dreadnaught, which is Ren's design, in that it utilizes a slightly slimmer shape than a standard Martin dread: I've no idea what his build list looks like at this time, but I am happy for him that he's back to building under his own name, and with his son, with these, his first Ferguson guitars since the last century! Very cool post. I've followed Ren Ferguson's career as a builder and two of his younger off shoots: Kevin Kopp and John Walker. It's interesting that Ren is building under his name with his son...seems right. Glad "his" guitars will be available again in the future. Thanks for sharing!

Awesome! Glad to hear Ren is building guitars still! Got to hang out and go out with Ren for a week during some training I had at Gibson, really knowledgeable and a nice guy too.

Fred, the photo of the dreadnought is showing for me, but not the 00-NY.
Anyway, it’s always interesting to learn what Ren Ferguson is up to. Thanks for posting. whm |

Photos are working on my iPad but not on my work pc/chrome....
I like the 00! I have Gibson acoustics that Ren may have walked past when they were built! Superior guitars! BluesKing777. |

Well, folks, I'm sorry for the broken non-links and no photos showing up. I've tried and tried to get them to work using google photos, and the more I try the dumber I am apparently becoming.
Anyone wants photos, just PM me and I'll send them out. Fred Last edited by J185-4Me; 10-27-2020 at 08:29 PM. |

Ren is a good egg. We met him in Bozeman when he was with Gibson, and he built a couple of my wife's lefties.
