I prefer the 1st 2 versions (capo on 3) and over the shoulder mic placement. I like the warmer sound also.

Wrighty, your latest I liked. Much more overall clarity. For fun I did some raw file tweaks in the following order:
10 sample delay left channel Low cut at 31 hz (12 db per octave) High cut at 7511 hz (36 db per octave) 0.85 db boost at 129 hz Q 2.15 Seventh Heaven Rooms 2 Guitar Room at -13 db (Master Equalizer disabled) http://dcoombsguitar.com/Misc/AGF1017.wav

Thanks for this - very interesting. I like the warmth achieved by cutting the highs - I would never have considered putting a steep high cut this low down the spectrum but it works really well here I think. I had already put a low pass at 40hz / 18db/oct. Why the boost at 129hz out of interest?

I think I was being guided too much by Stephens mix that I was using as a reference - it is very treble focused.

As far as trebles. Some melody notes did hit a bit hard. Partially a volume thing. I would not call it harsh. When you listen back through studio monitors in near field or with studio headphones the high frequencies have higher punch than you would get with most music listening consumer products. Also with distance the treble frequencies are the first to drop off. Personally I do tweaks around what sounds good to me with my Grado headphones within my DAW. The raw recording is always around should I want to tweak later.

I was wondering what the distance was from the mics to the guitar on your A-B setup. Also, what was the distance on your other setup (mic pointing towards the neck join)? Thanks for sharing all of these recordings and the setup details.

Sure - on both setups mics were around 10-12” from the guitar.

I tend to mix in my AKG 702 headphones as I don’t have any monitors at present - I do notice the treble emphasis here but the high cut you applied has tamed it and I have applied the same to my mix now and am pretty happy with the result. Thanks very much for all your help on this, I am learning a lot.

I can't listen as the soundcloud links have gone but did you sort your room treatment out? Better people than me have commented/advised about the finer details but I'm a bit evangelical about acoustic treatment and you pics don't make it clear if you have a ceiling cloud above your recording position. If not that is what I would do next, then, maybe, remove the rug so that the floor can reflect some 'sparkle' without generating flutter echoes. If you have got a cloud then 'as you were'

Thanks - it’s a work in progress! I don’t have a cloud - I did in the past but to be honest found the effect minimal. Maybe I’ll try again. Rug, could do that. Cheers..

Stopped by for a quick question Peter if you don't mind.
Finally were able to get a pair of great little MC4s . Do you think Scarlett 2i2 would do it for now? I know you're using audient id14 and used to have Scarlett as well ... Budget is not a problem for me , striving for good clean sound. THanks in advance

Scarlett should be fine, but I found the Audient to be a decent step up - just better mic pre-amps and gut me a warmer sound. There are some very good mic pre-amps out there if you want to spend more (Great river etc)
