Action or strings?
Since I'm a noob with my first guitar I seem to be having a little problems, especially with the frets. Now I know that it takes time to get used to all the finger movements and stretching, but was wondering if changing either the action, or strings may help during this learning phase.
From doing some online searches it almost seeems my action is where it needs to be, but I'll still take some feedback. The measurement on the low E at the 12th fret is 3.5mm. Since I bought my guitar used, I have no idea what strings are on, or their tension. I've thinking about changing them to D'addario EJ43. Thoughts? |

3.5mm is very high - get a setup, and ask the luthier about strings at that point. Take his suggestion and have him do the setup for that set. (I know what I tend to like, but that doesn't matter for you)
My guitars are all 2 to 2.5 mm at 12th, and are universally praised for their playability.

Most specs are taken at the twelfth frett with the string depressed at the first frett.
Low E sting For high action 4/32" For low action 3/32"

Ok...I rechecked the 12th fret with the 1st depressed and it went down to 3mm.

All my steel strings are set 3mm at the 12th, nylon is higher. I have found by going much lower, even with good mid neck relief, buzzing creeps in, even worse now in the dry winter weather. Make sure you measure from the top of the 12th fret to the bottom of the low E string to get proper setup. Everyone likes their setup different, I'm just giving you mine.

3.5 at the bass e at the 12th fret is about normal...if it measures 3.5 at the treble e,
It's very high. Fg

Well I went ahead and changed the strings. I thought the 4,5,& 6 were brass wound until I got them off the tuners and discovered they were originally silver. I'm guessing they were the original Godin strings that come on the La Patrie guitars. I put on a set of La Bella 2001-MT and have noticed a world of difference.

If the neck is straight or has a slight amount of relief, you could shave the bridge saddle a little-at-a-time. the nut slot depth might be increased but you can ruin a good nut if not careful. you might find that the new strings are all the adjustment you need
