Beating a Dead Seagull!
This just in from the Department of Redundancy Department: The Seagull S6 is a GREAT guitar. Bought one, sold it, regretted selling it.
Yesterday bought another and upon playing it was instantly and unmistakably reminded why everyone should have one of these in their arsenal. What a fantastic guitar. I think this is the Volkswagen Beetle (the original one, not the new-fangled one) of the acoustic guitar world. Simple, unadorned, but carefully thought out and crafted with the goal of making beautiful music. Seagull: mission accomplished. dj |

The Yamaha FG700 is like the VW Cabrio.

I'd have to agree to concur with you enthusiastic assessment of the S6. Quite a nice machine.

I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I am actually really drawn to the Seagull headstock, very minimalist and unique.

Headstock
When discussing Seagulls, the headstock is usually mentioned. I disliked it at first but it did not stop me from considering or buying a Seagull instrument. Now I don't even notice it.
Seagull likes to talk about the advantages of the headstock on their website, etc. They say it helps the instruments stay in tune. I say this might be true but the advantage is minimal at best. I suspect the real reason for the pointy headstock is to distinguish the instrument from the sea of acoustic guitars on the market. One look and anyone can tell it's a Seagull. Like I said, the VW Beetle of the guitar acoustic guitar world. No one would mistake a Beetle for anything else. and the driver/player is sure to be satisfied and still have money in his/her pocket. I am a fan of Godin instruments: I have owned Seagulls, Art & Lutheries, and Normans. Slightly different but all similar. dj |

I think your analogy to the VW Beetle is dead on! Pointy headstock doesn't bother me a bit. The S6 is a classic, and I especially like the cedar top version. Nothing else quite like it.

I have 2 Seagulls. An original S6 Cedar and a S6 Coastline Folk Cedar, both with 1.80" nuts for my big hands. I really like the warm clear sound and quality at a low price. I bought both of mine on CraigsList and got them for near half the normal retail price.

When I was a kid we had that old volkswagon and it had a hole in the floor of the back seat where I sat. So you are right, the Seagull is like the old Volkswagon - they both have a sound hole.
Congrats on the new S6. |

Cedar
I've owned a few spruce-topped models but this one is cedar and I like it. Better? I don't know. Different? Yes.
My previous S6 had mahogany back and sides but I think I like this cherry variant better. This is Seagull's magic mix! |

I think Godin has done a great job with thier products. I really like the fact they're not imported from SE Asia... |

We had a similar discussion on my Seagull chat forum (private message me if you'd like the link) and decided that Seagull is the "Volvo" of acoustic guitars ... solidly built, unusual styling, not for everbody, but a good value with a steady loyal following.
