NGD: Augustino
I happened upon this Augustino dread a couple of days ago and, after a bit of horse trading, managed to take this home. It's a really beautiful sounding instrument and it plays like a million bucks. It has a pickup in it, but I don't know what kind. I'll take a look when I change the strings. I just recently moved to Clearwater where Augie's shop was. There doesn't seem to be a lot about these online so any information anyone might have would be most appreciated.

Haven’t heard of that brand but if it plays as nice as it looks, then you got a great deal.

Augustino LoPrinzi
Had a small shop in N.J making Steel string guitars Under the Augustino name He later moved to Florida and concentrated On classical guitars Under the LoPrinzi Name. He worked with his daughter Donna Who is a talented luthier in her own right. Augustino retired and Donna carrys on. You can Google LoPrinzi guitars for her web site

Your custom Augustino
Likely a 1990's build it may have a maple bridge plate.
Seems to be one of his finest custom builds. He had a great stash of wood from the 60's I have quite a few of his builds from 1970-1993 |

That’s beautiful congratulations, I would love to see more pics if possible. How would you describe the tone?

I’ve played several 1970’s vintage LoPrinzi guitars, back when he had a factory building them, but never had the chance to lay hands on any of his more recent instruments. Glad you’re happy with it.

After retiring, Augie started engraving guns as a very small business/hobby.

Congrats on that beauty. I am not sure on the guitar side of things but I know Donna makes a lot of custom ukuleles. She built me a really nice Koa uke a couple years ago. I would love to be able to play one of the guitars one of these days.

That’s a fine looking guitar. I remember when he was in NJ—I didn’t know the LoPrinzi connection.

Congrats on a great find. Augie LoPrinzi was one of the great unsung masters of lutherie, both steel and nylon string. In his later years of practice, I believe he built quite a devoted following for his ukes. Glad to hear Donna is continuing this legacy.
(Aside: The first time I visited his website, I chuckled at the headline, "Meet your maker.") |
