Reverb plug-ins, under $50?
I've googled, but don't know what I'm looking at. Any suggestions welcome. What makes one better over another
and is it really just the knowledge of how to adjust the options that really makes the difference?

PC? VST freeware:
Before spending money try out Freeverb too. http://www.sinusweb.de/freetoo.html The downside is no pre-sets, although you can look at the settings from other manufacturers, adjust settings to match, and save as your own pre-set. Terry West has a bunch of very good plug-ins that are very economically priced. |

https://www.siraudiotools.com/sir1.php There are lots of impulses around, you can even get the Bricasti M7 impulses free, so you get somewhat close to much more expensive reverbs.

At $50, Valhalla Vintage Verb is your best bet.

Unless one records commercially there is little reason to spend money on plugins; going back several years now. Google "free VST" and you'll find myriad options for effects, processing, and utilities to use with your DAW software of choice (there are even some free DAW software options that are quite good). Since they're free you can afford to load up on them and see what works for each particular song; you will no doubt end up with more than one of any given effect or processor. The only VST I think everyone should have that isn't free is some flavor of Izotope's Ozone.
I've been doing this since the mid-eighties and led the vanguard using a laptop for production when Steinberg introduced the first VSTs; I don't know much, but of these things I definitely do. If money is burning a hole in your pocket, though, go ahead and spend it. If not... KV is one of the best sources for VSTs from independent devs and many are free. sign up and become a forum member: https://www.kvraudio.com/plugins/reverb/most-popular This remains an excellent collection, a classic, reverb included: Kjaerhus Audio Classic Series One of the best free bundles (including a reverb) on the internet: https://www.meldaproduction.com/MFreeFXBundle Anther well regarded bundle with reverb: https://www.reaper.fm/reaplugs/ Here are some other links for a myriad of free VSTs: http://www.vstplanet.com/Effects/Effects2.htm https://www.bluecataudio.com/Product..._FreewarePack/ http://www.digitalfishphones.com/mai...em=2&subItem=1 http://mda.smartelectronix.com/ http://www.vst4free.com/index.php?plug-ins=Reverb Last edited by Optofonik; 04-18-2019 at 03:20 AM. |

I've used epicVerb from KVR audio just a little bit. I'm still getting my feet wet with plug ins. The free epicVerb seems to be well regarded.

As mentioned different algorithms will have different sonic characteristics , that said Yes how you adjust the parameters can have effect . Understanding I do not do solo acoustic guitar , I like to set mine up in parallel (although with solo acoustic I am told it is not particularly an advantage per se) But it is how the Professional engineers I know do it . And that way I can set up an EQ specifically for the reverb, place it before the reverb on it's channel and still have a completely unprocessed signal going to the main/outs channel. As far as "adjustments" regardless of using a pre set or not , I think pre delay adjustment goes a long way , I like about 60 ms of pre delay to let in enough unprocessed signal to keep the air and transient response a bit more in the forefront. And then the decision of "do I want it as a noticeable featured effect", or "do I want as background ambience that is not featured "? Either is valid depending on what you are trying to achieve and determines how much you use.

There are so many options nowadays it makes my head spin. The Valhalla Reverbs are all right on $50.00 if I'm not mistaken. Among freeware reverbs my favourites are Voxengo OldSkool Verb, Magnus@Smartelectronix Ambience and Balance Audio Tools SPTeufelsberg Reverb. That said, my go to reverb is still Seventh Heaven. It's a little more than $50.00 but worth every cent of the cost. In fact I'd describe it as the Seventh Heaven of digital reverbs! (Sorry, I couldn't resist the obvious).

Thanks Trevor, I'll look at those. I'm experimenting with a free one now and saving my "presets." I just want a hint of reverb to give the trebles just a touch of that haunting tone ( for Celtic airs and similar music).

I have no shortage of reverb plugins but since I bought Seventh Heaven, I've hardly used any other reverb. The only other one that gets any use is the UAD Ocean Way Studios and that's limited to re-mic-ing VIs.

I was going to mention Seventh Heaven but was not sure of the OP's set up ---does't it require an iLok ?

Here's an interesting quote with a link to the source: "Reverb creates space while moving sound further away from the listener; delay creates space while keeping sound near to the listener." https://www.musicianonamission.com/how-to-use-reverb/ Since first encountering this concept I've tried to incorporate sprinklings of reverb and delay, mainly because I really dislike the "cave" effect that reverb causes, even when applied conservatively. Voxengo has a couple of delay plugins that are easy to use and Logic's (my DAW) stock delays get the job done too. Food for thought at least. |

Good point! Yes it does, or at least it did when I bought it.
