You have. I can't have. I want, therefore I insult you.
An exception that "proves the rule": Larry Coryell (RIP). Pretty much played his 1967 Gibson L-400 exclusively. And his attitude was nothing like the semi-pro subject of this thread as Coryell was to all accounts generous with his time and knowledge (jazzguitar.be and the LC facebook page recounts many such experiences of those that were lucky enough to know him).

So is Willie. My point is that I don't believe that the number or price of guitars owned by an individual defines their status as a "professional." That merely defines their willingness to spend money on guitars; one's source of income defines their status as a professional. The guy that the OP encountered either had a bad day, was antisocial...

Yes but the person who insulted the OP basically said that having more than one guitar meant you were not a professional. All I was saying is that number of guitars is not the measure of professionalism. So we are actually in agreement.

Let me clarify--I was not so much insulted as I was amused. Maybe I should have put "insulted" in quotes.

I'm an amateur and my wife says I have too many guitars because I'm not a professional musician. I guess I should get rid of all but one of them and go pro. She's just darned lucky I'm not an amateur gigolo.

without being there and seeing what went down with my own eyes its hard to form any real opinion about his behaviour

has anyone considered the guy might just have a whacky sense of humour.

He knows a $1500 guitar is not a expensive guitar, he may be being sarcastic or ironic call it what you will.

also, when complimented about his tone,he more or less says its all down to having a good guitar and leaves you to work out for yourself there might be a bit more to it than just that.

And the one guitar thing.....(I'm sure he will have several guitars), its his way of saying you can only play one guitar at a time, having a bunch stashed away somewhere is not paying your dues.

faced with him, I probably would have smiled a little and said something like " right, I'll leave you to it "

Let's change the title then: Amused by a professional musician. Totally different story

I was trying to say that the number/price of guitars doesn't define one as either an amateur or a pro just as the number or cost of motorcycles that one owns doesn't define one as a professional motorcycle rider/racer. It's merely how one chooses to spend their money...

He said, "Yeah--I'm using a chorus pedal. That and I'm using an expensive guitar. It's a $1,500 guitar instead of the $300 guitars I used to use. I'm a professional working musician, and professional working musicians only have one guitar, not like all those guys who have a room full of guitars and never play any gigs."

He looks and me and says, "You've probably got five guitars at home, don't you?"

"Well, just four actually..."

"That's what I figured" he added as he walked off.

Nice meeting you, too.
My response-
''well,er,actually....when one of my luthiers finishes making another 2000 dollar guitar, its usually given to me to try out whenever i want!'' so i might have 5 all told when i get home..see ya''

You're only a pro when OTHER PEOPLE consider you to be. I don't think either Willie or Jackson Browne would feel the necessity to tell us his status as a musician. Of course, even the OP says they were quite good. He may even be as good as HE thinks he is.

Moocheng - Of course, none of us really know the guitar players inflection or intention, but within the context given, I find it hard to believe that it was anything other than derogatory.

I would think acting that way is an ineffective way of building a following, but I'm an old(ish) man, so what do I know (& get offa my lawn).

Jon Gomm (famous in my eyes) has only played his beloved Lowden 'Wilma' up until recently.

According to the IRS, I am a professional musician. LOL.
