Sorry to hear this today. Godspeed Bill. And thanks. Lean on Me is one of my favorites.

I remember, years and years ago, discovering Bill Withers. I'd known much of his music, but I was gobsmacked when I realized that one guy had written all those tremendous songs.

I love this kind of ensemble scene: acoustic guitar, plus laid back band. Such beautiful rhythm, feel, and melody. And passion!

Sorry to see him go. He had such a great voice. Lean On Me is a great song. Personally, I prefer Ain’t No Sunshine by a small margin.

Great songs but you're missing out if you don't dig deeper. Some of his best songs never made it to popularity.
I am so thankful for the music he gave us.

Similar experience here...

A couple of years ago, I was noodling around on the guitar one afternoon, and felt a tune coming on. Walked upstairs humming it to myself, thinking how much I liked what I'd come up with - and then realized, with a start, that Bill Withers had written Lean On Me many years earlier

RIP indeed.

I'm not a suspicious or overly spiritual person, but without knowing he passed away, something poked at me playing two of his songs.

To a large degree his voice and talent was missing from the scene for sometime already, but in his heyday he was the kind of songwriter and singer who could help a listener just by hearing him sing his songs. Regardless of the paper labels of genre, that's the definition of soul or gospel music I think.

Does anyone here know why he became estranged from the music business for decades it seems? I know I watched a documentary on him a few years back that seemed vague about it, other than he didn't get along with the business who didn't understand his art.

I and 12,000 other people saw him perform in the round at the University of Tennessee Stokely Athletic Center. It was his first tour in 1971 and he was touring behind his first album, Just As I Am. He played "Ain't No Sunshine" right out of the gate. Once he finished it and the applause died down, he quipped, "Well, now that I've gotten my one hit out of the way, let's play you some other songs." He had a great, folksy stage presence, which was amazing because he was only weeks away from working his job at Weber Aircraft in Burbank, CA. In fact, the album cover had a pic of him with his lunch box on a lunch break at the plant.

I went with my parents. My father was a professor at the University and he had been given tickets by one of his graduate assistants. My parents were so impressed by him that they went right out and bought the album.

RIP, Bill.

The article linked touches a little on that. It started (at least) with friction with a new label when his original went under. Artist and the "suits" at odds, and old old story I'm afraid. "Have a Cigar" one of the better songs about it.

I know we all have to go, but his passing really bothers me even though he was 81. What happened? You will be missed Bill.
