Default Playing Electric with a pick

For years I have been playing fingerstyle on acoustic guitars (classical and steel) at home, by myself. Wednesday I was invited to play with a garage band where they are excellent musicians and play electric guitars with picks. It was so much fun!

Playing electric with a pick requires a different skill set but I am now dedicated to broadening my horizons. Hal Leonard’s Rock lesson book is on the agenda!

Yes, electric guitars with picks are splendid fun... and so are electric guitars without picks! Just ask Stephen Stills, Derek Trucks, Jim Messina, Ry Cooder and many, many more marvelous players!!!

Point being, it's worth an experiment to discover how you play without any picks... tweak the tone knobs a bit and have a blast!

I'm glad you enjoyed the stretch! I use both fingers and picks on electric. This guy doesn't:

Default No pick!

Thank you gentlemen! It never occurred to me to try playing an electric without a pick, but now I will give it a go.

Oh yeah so much fun and such a different but hard skill to learn. Alternate picking, string skipping, tremolo picking. It’s endless!

Or like others said, you don’t really need a pick. Here’s one of my favorite electric guitar players and he doesn’t use a pick and shreds with the best of them.

This is how a 'travis picker' handles an electric guitar. Kind of ungainly...but EFFECTIVE!
